I'll be posting on my instagram account @anotherseattleartist when I will be adding new work to my shop as well as in progress photos. Please keep track of my progress there! I love my Galaxy cup and saucer. They are more amazingly awesome in person. Katie has so much talent, together with a sweet personality, which shows in every piece she makes.

About

A Smile in the Rain

My name is Katie Marks and I am the creator and sole employee of Silver Lining Ceramics. I live and work in Seattle Washington.

I have always loved clay. it has been my medium of choice since I was a little girl. Even though college wasn’t an option for me I knew that I wanted to learn the art and craft of clay. I took one class as my local community college and I was hooked. I then found a wheel on Craigslist and taught myself how to throw. After a few years of using my studio apartment as a pottery studio I was fortunate enough to land a job with an incredible production potter as his studio assistant. He became my mentor and I have learned everything from glaze chemistry to kiln firing from him.

I always knew I wanted to work with porcelain the translucency and bright color possibilities inspire my imagination. I love the fact that I can take a lump of dirt and turn it into something unique and beautiful from my brain. I love holding my finished pieces and knowing that these only exist in the world because I exist.
My process involves carving and drawing into the wet clay so that I can add layers of depth to each piece. I also mix all of my own glazes from raw materials. Being able to do this allows me to have a lot more control over the look of the final piece. I high fire my work which not only makes the clay strong and durable but also changes the glazes and causes them to flow like running water and that makes me smile.
I am inspired by my surroundings. As a someone who grew up in Seattle I have lived in the gloom of the overcast sky and week-long rain showers for most of my life. I wanted to show the beauty I see in the gloom. This city is teeming with creativity and I find myself wandering around in a dream like state. I guess you could say the weather mixed with the abundant art/D.I.Y scene get my creative juices flowing.
I really love throwing each piece on the pottery wheel. I usually use that time to think of what designs I am going to carve on them. I hardly ever know exactly what I am going to make when I sit down. I let the clay inspire me. I find that process really interesting and fun. I also really love the fact that because I do everything by hand that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. I come close but they truly are one of a kind.

Welcome to my shop! My pieces are primarily wheel thrown or hand-built porcelain. I love playing with the fluidity of my glazes that I get from the high firing heat. I hope you like my work! I really love doing what I do.

Coffee in the morning is good but coffee consumed from a handmade object is even better :)

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
I will accept paypal and credit cards.

I would also love to trade with other artists. Please contact me for more information if you would like to work something out :)
Shipping
READY TO SHIP items are shipped using usps 3 day priority mail within a week upon receiving payment for your order. I am a one woman show so sometimes it can take a week before I get packages out.

MADE TO ORDER items take a solid 4-6 weeks for delivery. Where I am at in my process when the order is placed along with how many out standing orders I have currently will determine how long you will wait. If you would like to know if your piece is on the list for the next round of pots please feel free to contact me. I work as fast as my hands can make while still producing quality work. Im a one woman show and I really appreciate your patience and understanding that hand made ceramics take time.
Refunds and Exchanges
I want you to love the pieces you receive from me. If you are not happy with your purchase please let me know within five days of receiving your items and we can work out an exchange.

My glazes tend to craze due to the fluid nature. This is not a defect it is the sign of handmade wonderfulness. Also there are lovely uncontrolled blushes of red that appear on my pieces from the atmosphere of the kiln during the firing. Sometimes there is more sometimes less.

Glaze variations will happen!! I fire cone 10 reduction which is very hot and unpredictable! The glaze will always look slightly different from the photographs of made to order pieces due to the fact that I cannot control where the drips form. I love this firing technique and I love that each piece is one of a kind and I hope you will understand and appreciate them too!

EXCHANGES/RETURNS
I don't give refunds unless there was an error on my part. Please contact me and we will work it out.
I am willing to exchange your made to order piece for a different one but you are responsible for returning the piece back to me undamaged. I will send the exchanged piece back to you for no extra charge.

**USA/CANADA **All custom orders are finale sale. Unless there is damage from shipping on my part, In that rare case I will either issue a refund or will remake the item for you. I pack my pieces very well and this VERY rarely happens. If the piece is damaged upon arrival at my fault I request photographs and then if you decide to have a replacement made I bump you to the top of my todo list and send it out ASAP. You do not have to pay shipping twice if the damage is my fault.
If you are outside the USA pieces can be in transit for 30+ days I will replace a damaged piece for no charge but you must pay for re-shipping. Again I pack my pieces very well so this rarely happens but some countries are rougher with packages and I can not be held responsible if the post mis-handles the package.

CANCELING SALES - If you must cancel your sale you MUST contact me via convo or email and let me know.

LOSS IN THE MAIL- If for some reason your piece is lost in the mail we can both file an insurance claim up to $100. If the piece says it was delivered on my end I can not be held responsible for finding where your piece actually went. Please contact your local post office before contacting me. I am really nice and I want you to get your piece so it is possible to work something out if it doesnt turn up. If a piece goes unclaimed at the post office and is returned to me I will ship it out to you again but you must re-pay for shipping.

FEEDBACK
Your satisfaction is important to me. If you are not happy with your order for any reason please let me know first and we will work it out.
Additional policies and FAQs
Please consider giving a feedback, when you have the item. I hope you will feel happy with my pots and let me know it! :)

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I am NOT accepting custom order requests at this time. What you see in my shop updates is what I have available.

Wholesale availability

I am swamped right now and can not take on wholesale accounts. If you own a shop I appreciate your interest in my work but I am having a lot of fun selling things on my own and I will turn you down. Thank you anyways :)

Can I reserve a piece?

To try to keep it as fair as possible I announce my shop updates on Instagram and other social media 3-4 days leading up to the day of the sale. I can not reserve pieces for you. It is first come first serve sort of thing. Thank you for understanding :)

How much are your pieces?

Crystal themed pieces range around $150-185 as they are functional sculptures and take a lot of time to hand make each individual point. My other work varies in price.

Do you ship worldwide?

I ship worldwide and pack everything very carefully!

Can I customize the writing on the bottom?

The signature on the bottom that reads "Katie Made Me" is not negotiable. That is just how I sign my work :)

I run a blog will you give me something so I can promote you?

I do not do blog giveaways. If you are a blogger you are welcome to purchase a piece from my shop and review it but I will not send you promotional material.  while I do really appreciate your interest, I have nothing to give away at this time.

Every time I go to your shop it says it's empty? Are you sold out?

Yes I am sold out. I release my work in small batches. I announce the time and date on instagram and other social media a few days before the update. I tend to sell out very quickly (5 min or less). My shop sits empty more often than not. Fear not! More items are always being made!
