Once upon a time...

Since either one of us can remember, Christmas has been our favourite time of year. Some of our fondest childhood memories involve the smell of pine, the quiet jingle of glass bells and the magical sparkle of dainty glass baubles.

In our family, making ornaments every year has been a long-running tradition spanning three generations. On our Christmas trees, antique glass has always been accompanied by various handmade ornaments made from whatever was on hand: paper, eggshells, fabric scraps, pretty buttons and sequins, bits of tinsel.

One year, on a whim, we decided to try our hand at painting glass ornaments and instantly fell in love with the process. We made so many that we decided to share, gifting our closest family and friends with some of our creations, and a new tradition was born.

Almost a decade has passed since then, and we still continue that tradition. The excitement and expectation always begins early; like children searching for presents all over the house, everyone is super-curious to know what we're designing for them that year. (Sometimes, the questions begin as early as June!)

A few years ago we found two antique Victorian ornaments at an estate sale and it was love at first sight. We began to research the ornaments of the era and decided to try our hand at making them. The rest, as they say, is history.

We never considered selling our ornaments until a family friend suggested it. After thinking about it for a few days we decided 'Why not?' and Silver Owl Studio was created.

Silver Owl Studio is the operated by the mother & daughter team of Hanna and Irene.

While neither of us has a background in the arts, we have always been very creative and enjoy a variety of artistic pursuits, including jewelry design and painting in oils.

Our styles are different, (Hanna's ornaments tend to be elegant and intricately detailed, while Irene's are whimsical and full of colour), but we're both perfectionists and take great care with every single one of our creations.

To this day, we continue to marvel how a glass ball, bits of paper, a few pieces of trim and some wire can be transformed into a one-of-a-kind treasure.

We sometimes like to joke that our studio looks like a hoarder-elf's workshop. Taking a peek inside will show:

•A number of shelves packed with boxes, boxes and more boxes of beautiful vintage glass balls, bells, pine cones, birds, figural shape, toppers... The glass is mostly German, although we also have a number of Czech and Polish ornaments as well.

•A substantial collection of antique paper scraps and greeting cards, a collection that never seems to stop growing. (It's a bit addictive!) We love to hunt for rare angels and Santas.

•A heap of vintage fabric trim all sorted by colour in pretty boxes. (Our favourite is vintage velvet from the 1940s; so pretty!)

•A stash of Dresden trim, stars, angel wings, and other pretty German foil papers.

•A hoard of vintage mercury glass beads and garlands of every possible shade and shape.

•A pile of antique metal tinsel.

•A wonderful assortment of fine German wires, including "crinkle" wire that we use for wrapping around an ornament and sparkling steifkantille.

•A cupboard filled with tubes of fine paint in solid and metallic colours, a large bucket of brushes, and a box of glitter in a rainbow of colours.

•A furry visitor/muse. (Our dog and sometimes one of our cats likes to lounge on the floor and inspire us.)
