Someone wiser than us once described art as “humanity’s struggle to communicate the sublime yearning of the soul with very simple tools.”
At Simplesmith, we find ourselves obsessed with the question: what is the nature of art? Is it merely a product of paint and canvas and charcoal? Is it made by the hands, or the mind? And where in that matrix does A.I. fit in? Is it a tool, like a paintbrush, or is it a companion in the pursuit of greater artistic expression?
Rather than shy from it, we have embraced the use of A.I. in creating our works. We incorporate it into various stages of our production process, and the result is what you see here. These images are the product of human inspiration and A.I. collaboration (plus a mind-numbing amount of subsequent editing and tweaking). When done properly, it is a difficult, frustrating, and ultimately rewarding experience. And in the end, we often find ourselves faced with another question: who inspired who?
We hope you enjoy these works as much as we enjoyed making them, and find inspiration in them for years to come. That, and maybe you’ll find something that will finally tie the room together (yes, I’m looking at you, my roommate’s favorite chair that really doesn’t go with any aesthetic, anywhere).
The struggle, as they say, is real.
