How Sweet Six 1 Five was Created
In October of 2011, I received an upsetting, but expected phone call. The company I worked for was closing it's doors. I was going to lose my nice, cushy executive position in a matter of weeks.
With two boys at home, I knew I needed to find a way to support them. I searched endlessly for a new job similar to my last, but it just wasn't there. One day I decided something must be done. Bills were piling up and the stress of not finding a job was taking its toll.
I decided to start over. I decided to think about what I loved to do when I was younger. How did I get so side tracked from the things I love to do? And there was my answer staring me straight in the face. Art.
Arts and crafts have always been my true passion. I've danced around the idea for quite a few years. I was a painter. I was a theatre set designer. I made quilts and dabbled in jewelry. But when I really sat down and thought about it, it was the small, unique items that would make me the happiest.
Items that didn't cost much to make or cost much to buy. I liked the little ideas. Something that could be altered in just the slightest was and make the biggest difference.
After hearing from an old school friend in Maryland, she told me about her button making business. While she wasn't bringing in bucket loads of cash, it was something she found to enjoy in her spare time.
I decided that day that this sounded like something right up my alley. I spent money I didn't have on purchasing all the equipment and programs I would need to start my new small business and named it Simply Sarah Crafts.
I started my own website hoping to generate orders online. I spent all of my weekends in 2011 vending at the same craft fairs I went to as a small child with my mother. It was here that I knew I was finally doing what I love.
Realizing that my own website wasn't generating the advertising I needed to bring in the customers, I went in search of a new way to bring my products to the public eye. I found Etsy.com.
Since then, my small arts and crafts business has taken off. I have sold items in all 50 states, 65 countries, and 6 continents. In 2013, I changed the name of my business (for a multitude of reasons - but mainly to mix things up) to Sweet Six1Five.
It puts a smile on my face knowing that a girl on her 24th birthday is opening present, handmade by me, and it is exactly what she wanted. I love knowing a cheerleading coach is handing out my 75 pocket mirrors to a team of girls just before they head onstage in a national competition. It tickles me to no end to know that my bottle openers will be sitting at a wedding reception table waiting for guests to arrive.
This is where I belong. This makes me feel better and more important than executive job could do for me. Etsy has given my life a little more meaning then it once held.
Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator
I live life as a mother of three, wife of one, and work four full-time jobs. I love every minute of life but find that a little vodka helps make that happen. I love creating items for people to share and that don't break the bank!
