Converting dreams into reality!

Matti Hyvärinen established Sirokoru in 1958 and he worked as a self-employed goldsmith, jewelry designer and entrepreneur.

It was not easy for a young novice to enter the relatively small but very competitive jewelry market in Finland. But his passion for the job and enthusiasm carried him through difficult times.

In 1967 Matti won his first important jewelry design prize; the DeBeers' Diamonds International Award (the so called Diamond Oscar) in New York. That gave him the much needed confidence to move on and head into the foreign market.

Soon Sirokoru's export trade began to grow and Matti was able to hire more employees. He employed about a dozen young apprentices and taught them the required skills to carry out the designs in bigger quantities. Matti was one of the first goldsmiths to acquire a set of proper casting equipment in Finland. Gradually the company grew out to be one of the key players in the process of making the Finnish and Scandinavian jewelry design world famous.

For a corner stone of our export business Matti created two distinctively different collections of high quality silver jewelry; FinnDeer Art Design and Di Leonardo. The clientele soon consisted of hundreds of jewelry importers, wholesalers and retailers all over the world.

Sirokoru's aim has always been to further improve the quality of the jewelry and make better and better designs. Due to Matti's substantial knowledge in casting gold and silver he was invited to join The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths as an associated member in the beginning of 1970's. This granted him access to a vast amount of information and helped him to build his expertise even more. This, and years of experimental work, made him something of a casting expert. Since a huge majority of modern handmade jewelry produced by casting, this knowledge on the subject has always been a very significant asset for Sirokoru.

Matti together with his son and successor Tomi wrote a textbook on lost wax casting " Casting jewelry from wax models". It is used in Finnish goldsmith and silversmith education today.

During his career Matti designed thousands of pieces in gold and silver. Whether they are one of a kind unique pieces or made in small series, they are quite rare locally because they are so widely sold around the world during a long period of time.

We are still stocking a huge pile of vintage pieces from our export business era including whole sets consisting of bracelets, rings, pendants, earrings and colliers with the same motif.

Lately we have tried to increase environmental awareness concerning the fast polluted Baltic Sea. A couple years ago we launched a new line of jewelry; The Baltic Sea collection. This collection is sold onboard cruise ships and at the marinas. The 100 or so different designs with nautical and marine-life motifs in this collection are made of a new eco-friendly silver alloy that we developed. This alloy is called EcoAct-silver. The silver content of this alloy is higher (Ag 965 ‰) compared to the conventional silver alloys and this allows a manufacturing process without any poisonous chemicals or emissions.
