About

It all started quite by chance.

My broken china story began literally by accident a few years back. My sister was knitting handbags with my hand spun yarn and paying lots of money for the button closures. I thought I could drill some cool stones for her so I collected some at the beach in Florida where we live in the winter. All was going well with the stones and I decided to have a cup of tea. When I opened the cupboard, which has doors on both sides, I accidentally push a stack of dishes out the other side and they crashed onto the floor. I gasped, but it was a eureka moment. I gathered up some of the best pieces and rode my bike down to the lapidary in our complex. They let me use the grinders and I ground smooth the irregular shapes. I brought them back to my place, set the stones aside and started drilling. Voila! Never drilled another stone, but I have made hundreds of broken china buttons, pins, brooches, earrings and necklace pendants since.
I don’t “break” china any more. I cut it. I use glass cutting tools and have a pretty fancy set up in my workshop, along with stacks of chipped and broken china that we have found or has come my way. Turns out lots of people hang onto chipped china (because don’t we all love dishes) and are more than happy to give it to me.

I love old things, especially vintage china. I like repurposing in general, and bringing new life into old used china is just plain fun. The family stories attached to much of our old china adds a special meaning to each piece I make. Enjoy!
