New Age Nuns: Beguine Revivalists

If you don't know about the Beguines, you won't find much in the history books because the only recorded information is from the Christian Beguines, and they were forced to become Christian or die.

We look to the practices and customs of our pre-Christian Beguine mothers, who were the first organized nurses in the castles of Europe during the middle ages and they remained independent from any organized religion. They were women-run, women-owned enclaves that were known for their excellence in textile making, agriculture, and medicine.

Our ETSY store is all about our mood-stabilizing mushroom coffee and getting it to the most amount of people around the world. However, we are also offering custom items on ETSY like our custom-designed patches, used to reward service at the enclaves. We also include books that we've written (one out and one coming) and miniatures, our metaphor dolls, or 'Metties' for short (think world war II betties). These are dolls we find naked and forlorn at flea markets, we clean them up, give them purpose-driven lives, and some of them, end up on our store. (Actually, we have never found a black barbie at the flea market, but we have purchased them to add diversity!)

They are called metaphor dolls because they are a metaphor for our society making throw-away women, throw-away people.

We have barbie Sisters of the Valley nun uniforms and barbie-sized hemp farming items and miniature sess items.

Your purchases all go to support our ecofeminist mission. And 5% of every batch is set aside and gifted to the local natives and veterans.

Our miniatures are not really for children, but the nun uniforms are sold separately and those and furniture items are. Smoking paraphernalia miniatures are sold separately, so you don't have to worry about a child getting at that.

  • Sister Kate

    Owner

Sister Kate is probably best known for her book, the Accidental Nun and film, Breaking Habits, both of which were released in 2019. Sister Kate founded the Sisters of the Valley in 2015 and still operates from the central valley of California.

Production partners

  • Amazon BookBaby

    NJ, United States

The book was written by Sister Kate, the founder of the Sisters of the Valley, but she worked with Book Baby to have it mass produced. The BookBaby team is wonderful and we are working on a second book with them now (2021) called 'The Book of the New Beguines'

  • Bones and Stitches

    Toronto, ON

We design the patches and they make them for us.

  • New Age Imports

    San Francisco, CA

We chose New Age Imports because they ethically source their materials and ensure that the wood is taken from naturally fallen trees. The fact that the wood lies in the forest for a period of time is what we believes gives it the magical qualities.

  • Starwest Botanicals

    Sacramento, CA

We order many of our raw herbs from Starwest Botanicals.

  • Vistaprint

    Dundalk, Ireland

We have all our labels made through Vistaprint, and since the beginning, our calendars. We order some specialty products for our store, through them as well. Reliable and easy to work with, priced right.
