Necessity is the mother of invention.

It was necessity that led me to make my first pair of shades and from there develop my own procedure for producing quality wooden frames. As a self-taught woodworker I have built a lot of things, from skateboarding bowls and half-pipes to floating wall units and picture frames. When my sunglasses broke I decided it was time for me to make my own. My workshop was in the front half of my parents single garage and the top of the driveway, a year later we built a wooden cabin over the filled in pool (after skating it for 6 months, sadly it was not a great pool.) until I moved to Cape Town from Durban in August 2018.

A quick break down of the procedure for making Sk8shades goes like this:

Old boards have their griptape removed then they are ripped, cross-cut, planed, cross-cut again, laminated, cured, cut into veneers, cross-laminated, cured again, shaped, edged, grooved, hardware attached, sanded, assembled, tested, adjusted, disassembled, sealed, smoothed, polished, assembled, packaged and shipped.

Welcome to Sk8 Shades.

Sk8shades are made from used skateboards that have rolled in pools, ridden
inner cities and bombed down daunting hills. All the stories, travels and
good times are etched into the wood and that¹s what makes them super
special. In my approach to the construction of your sk8shades I used a cross
layer in the core for added strength and I cut the temple arms from the nose
and tail of the skateboards.

Japanese UV400 polarized lenses and German spring hinges are standard.
Prescription lenses can be fitted.

No sk8shades are alike! So take care of your one-of-a-kinds. Don¹t sit,
stand or pass out on them, Don¹t use them as chop sticks, for hunting deer
in the woods, or for scuba diving. Don¹t loan them to shady characters and
never ever leave them at the bar.

The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)
Returns and exchange details
As of 1st February 2013:

Once you receive your shades please make sure everything is to your satisfaction. If you wish to return your shades, please do so within 14 days after receiving. You will be refunded once we receive them back undamaged.
No refunds on shipping and you will be responsible for shipping them back.
Shipping prices are included in the sale price. Your refund will be less shipping costs with proof of payment supplied.
Payment
Each pair of skate shades is Hand Made to order, once payment is made, in full, please allow 5 days for production, delivery times vary from 1 day to 7 days with a courier to your location depending where you are. We will get them to you as soon as possible.
Shipping
Shipping will be with an international or national courier service such as DHL or other well reputed service provider.

Lenses are polarized UV400 protected and prescription lenses can be fitted. German spring hinges are standard and are guaranteed for 50 000 actuations. All glues used for laminating are environmentally friendly and our lenses are made from cellulose as opposed to petro-chemicals.
