Skarvery Story

Hello :)
Here, I shall tell you a little bit about myself and how Skarvery started.
Well,… crochet has been a long-time hobby of mine. My two favorite things – history and fashion – I think they go hand in hand. Sometimes, when I make a scarf or a shawl I imagine how people used to make these things in ancient times, the very first people, the original crochet designers sitting in their caves by the crackling fire weaving a little bit of themselves into the history of mankind with every little knot and stitch…. I like to think these little stitches connect all of us through the fabric of Time. Who knows, maybe that is more than just naive optimism :) …

I’ve always been playing around with tying knots and making crochet since I can remember, but on a more serious note, I have been designing, crocheting, and otherwise experimenting with fabrics, colors, shapes, and patterns since around 2001. Then, around 2010, I came across Etsy. Of course it was absolutely inspiring to see all the beautiful handmade treasures that are found here. Inception occurred. I started planning and raising a budget for an Etsy shop.

The name “skarvery” occurred to me one day when I was watching a rather cute gentleman carve out my ice cream on a cold block of carving stone – he was molding the icy cream the same way that fashion designers mold their fabric – tossing it around, reshaping it, forming it into exactly what he wanted it to be until it was no longer just a chunk of cream but something entirely new that stood out on its own (and was absolutely delicious!). It made me think of how whenever we create something we always carve it out of something else. The material might be different, but creating a fluffy plush scarf out of a thin flat thread is very much like carving a graceful statue out of a clunky chunk of stone or turning a dead piece of wood into a beautiful musical instrument – somehow, the creation always beckons its creator, it’s like it is just waiting to come out.

And, so, around Autumn of 2011, Skarvery was born.

I crochet each piece without the use of looms or machines, stitch by stitch, entirely by hand, constantly adding new styles and re-creating. Every creation is unique – I do not repeat my designs, and so when you wear something from Skarvery you know that you are wearing a truly one of a kind piece, there is only 1 such accessory in the whole wide world. I choose only high quality natural yarns – Alpaca, Merino, Angora, and Cashmere – because unlike synthetic material, the natural fibers make your garment much more breathable while also doing a superb job at insulation.

To make a confession – the biggest excitement is when I sell international orders. Then I google the address to make sure everything is shipped correctly, and I can see all these wonderful photographs of the shipping destination – it is almost like visiting the other country myself :) and it proves to me once more how these little stitches keep us all connected. Actually, it is very interesting – the fibers I use are carefully collected by highly skilled local shepherds in Italy and Peru, imported into the USA without any middlemen, then handcrafted by me in New York, and then shipped out all over the world…and then maybe you wear them when you travel around the world as well? :) …I hope.

Etsy has taught me that success doesn't lie in the sale. Rather it's the feeling of excitement in the wearer's eyes when they put on the finished garment knowing it is an entirely one of a kind original piece handmade with love just for them.

Needless to say, I am very excited to be a part of the Etsy community and helping give the word "handmade" the ring of luxury that it deserves.
I hope you enjoy browsing through, and shopping at Skarvery. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments, I am always happy to hear from you :)
