Absolutely beautiful goddess figure from a talented artist. Everything about this piece is a pleasure - the colors, the weight and the curve of it in my hand. Thank you so much for this treasure!

About

Figurative sculpture in clay

Professionally I was a graphic designer and book illustrator for 12 years. Then, when my three sons were young, I started teaching graphics in the public school system. I could only create my art in any spare time I could get. But I was always thinking of what I wanted to create, even if I could not find the time or energy to do it. Now that my sons are college age, I find myself with more time to devote to my artwork.
I studied art in college and took a couple clay classes. But it wasn't until 2009 that I started to seriously work in clay. I took classes and workshops with several sculptors. In 2010, I started my Etsy shop and have enjoyed connecting with people all over the world. It is great knowing there are people out there who enjoy what I do. I love hearing from them and I imagine my sculptures traveling to far away places being taken care of by someone that appreciates them.
I am mostly interested in creating figures and faces. I do all the work. There are no helpers involved. I don't use any molds, every piece is unique.
I am working in a few different series now. I have my little fertility figures which are very enjoyable to make, and a great way to experiment with new designs and colors. I am also doing a series of figures in a niche to hang on the wall. These are more emotional pieces that relate to the inner life of a person and the healing powers of nature. Recently, I started doing these little faces on tiles reminiscent of the artwork found in old buildings. They are also meant to hang on the wall.
I fire in an electric kiln and use underglazes, glazes, engobes, and oxides. Some are commercial colors and some I mix myself. I also fire in a gas kiln and use the Raku method of reduction to smoke the pieces. The colors in this method are very unpredictable. It is always a surprise when you take out the piece. Sometimes a happy surprise, sometimes not. But it can always be fired again. : )
Since I started working with clay I just could not get enough of it. It is a magical material, so responsive to touch while wet, then turned to stone by fire. I look forward to working in this material for a long time, God willing. Recently I started working in watercolors again, I hope to add some to my Etsy shop soon. Thanks for visiting!
