Note from shop owner We are currently in the process of moving to a new location, which will allow us much more space for our sewing workroom. However, as we prepare for the move, we have reached the point where most of the ready made stock has already been packed and the sewing area has morphed into box storage!

If we are working on a custom order for you, we will continue to work on your project. We just aren't accepting any new custom orders for right now.

Historic Clothing and Period Sewing Techniques

Our main focus is on custom-made clothing for re-enactors, theater groups, living history associations, and weddings. But, there are times when we have basic items ready and available for shipping, so we showcase them here. Other times, we order supplies bulk quantities, allowing us to make these specialty items available to customers who would like to sew-their-own too.

You can see some of our past custom items at our website: www.SkyRidgeDesigns.com

Shop members

  • Bonnie Joines

    Owner

SkyRidge Designs was founded by Bonnie Joines over 20 years ago. She took a semester of sewing in high school economics, but otherwise is self-taught. Her love is Renaissance and Victorian eras.

  • Wesley Joines

    Owner

Wesley spent years in fashion photography before meeting Bonnie through a mutual business partner. Wesley went from just photographing the fashions to designing and producing them. He specializes in custom corsets and pattern making.

  • Elizabeth Joines

    Model & Sales

Elizabeth joined the business against her will. She spent her early years modeling and providing design feedback (children's clothes MUST be comfortable). However, as the years have passed, she has proven to be a very capable in sales.

  • Catherine Joines

    Model & Testing

Catherine is the newest member of the SkyRidge Design team. She is still mainly focused on product testing, however, she can occasionally be coerced into modeling for us. She absolutely insists that children's clothes should be easily laundered!

Returns and exchanges
We DO NOT issue refunds on clothing except in rare circumstances. Too many people want order an outfit for a special event (Halloween, Weddings, a day at faire) and then want to return it a couple of days later. Please make sure your measurements are accurate when comparing your size to the description of the product. If you aren't sure, then ask...we don't mind pulling something and measuring another part of the garment (just in case you have extra long arms!)

If you find that we've shipped you the wrong item or it is significantly different than what was described, notify us within 3 days of delivery. We will do what we can to fix the problem/replace the item.

If you have placed a deposit on a custom-made or customized piece of clothing, the deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE. This is because we start working on designing the outfit, remaking patterns, and shopping for your supplies right after we get descriptions and measurements from you.
Payment
All items must be paid-in-full prior to shipment.
Shipping
We try to ship within a few days of your order if the item has already been made or is a supply. Custom requests or "Made to Order" items will vary in their shipping time based on the complexity of the item and/or if we have to acquire additional supplies to create the order.

However we also have a child with special needs who spends a good deal of time in the hospital. Though we can check emails and such at the hospital, we obviously can't ship from there. If there will be delays in shipping, we will let you know so you can chose to either cancel the order or wait.

We try to estimate for combined shipping, but sometimes we miss the mark. If actual shipping/handling/insurance costs are more than $2 off, we will refund any difference to you.
Additional policies and FAQs
Custom made pieces have prices that reflect the cost of materials plus an hourly rate for making/modifying patterns and for garment construction. Most construction is priced at $20/hr. Some advanced techniques are $30/hr.

We estimate what we believe material and construction costs will be by comparing your description to previous outfits we've made. This estimate may change based on decisions or changes you make about your garment during the construction and fittings. We will keep you informed if any decisions are going to affect the final cost.

DEPOSIT: If your garment is estimated to cost less than $750, a 50% deposit will be required to begin work. If your garment is estimated over $750, a 33% deposit will be required. This DEPOSIT IS NON-REFUNDABLE once work on your garment has been started. The balance is due prior to delivery of your clothing.

FABRICS: We have several different fabric suppliers. Some keep the same, consistent inventory - which means we can re-order the same fabrics over and over again. This is great for basics such as shirting fabrics, 100% linen, wool sources, etc. But, this consistency usually means the fabrics are a bit more expensive. We generally reserve this option for customers who are special ordering specific garments.

We also have other suppliers where we go to their warehouse and hunt through rolls of mill-ends, "seconds," and other fabrics. Sometimes these are nicely labeled with content and care instructions. Sometimes they are sold as "unknown fabric content and unknown origin." Sometimes they have huge amounts of a single fabric on one visit, but then never again. Sometimes, they only have a couple of yards of something. This fabric is usually less expensive due to the unpredictability.

When we know the fabric content & care instructions, we will pass this information along to you. Sometimes we don't know enough to label it, but we can try to describe our experience with it (i.e. we know we've washed and pre-shrunk and entire bolt of fabric and it did just fine vs. we melted it when we used an iron!).
