About

Creating unique clay items with purpose.

Sleepy Owl Pottery began as a new hobby. I took a six-week pottery class in the summer of 2009. I instantly fell in love with the process of hand building clay. Immediately after completing the class, I bought my own clay, tools and a couple of pints of glaze. When I finished the first few items in my garage, I knew my hobby had to continue to the next level. My instructor sold me her used kiln; a small one just big enough for 15-20 small items. My father and brother made me a sturdy table and gave me some discarded shelving. I started pounding out the clay and making templates for new items weekly. Soon, I had finished items piling up. I continued making items for another year before my husband and friends finally prodded me enough to open a store on Etsy.

I am the Sleepy Owl of Sleepy Owl Pottery. Sleepy at times because I've stayed out in the studio 'til all hours of the night creating or completing new items. The process of making finished items of the wet clay can take weeks.
How I Do It:
I cut a handful of clay from the block, slam it on the table repeatedly, roll it out with a rolling pin, cut it into the desired shape, impress the wet clay with found items or rubber stamps, sometimes wrapping it around an old tin can, cover it with plastic, let it dry for several days to a week, fire it (bake it) in the kiln for several hours (8-10), glaze it (paint it), let it dry again for a day or so, then finally fire it in the kiln again for several hours. There's a lot of trimming, carving, re-shaping, uncovering, removing from the shape-holding item (the aforementioned tin can method), re-wetting, perfecting and various other methods that are also used in the creation process.

My pottery items are all made by hand, by me from raw clay. It's a laborious process which I complete lovingly. Each item has a story. I usually have no idea what items will be when I begin the process. I choose an amount of clay and the pottery is born right there in my hands and begins to manifest as I lose myself in the process.
