The Slow Hiker Story

I can vividly recall the day I become the slowest hiker in my family. We were climbing up Mt. Rainier, and while we used to have to stop to let the kiddos rest, now they were waiting on me. Sometimes just to breathe, sometimes to take a photo or gawk in awe of whatever tiny, little mundane detail had caught my eye. Usually all of the above. But I didn't want to be the weak link in the chain, so I hoofed it on up the mountain that day. But at the end of the hike, I felt like I hadn't really SEEN things. Just glancing left and right while on a pounding upward trajectory just didn't seem to do the moment justice -- and Mt. Rainier deserves some justice (can I get an Amen?!?). It felt like I hadn't really gotten the whole experience. I mean, just because I CAN race along the trail doesn't mean that I SHOULD race along the trail. Hence the name. And now, of course, I'm older (pushing 50, although my knees are clocking in at about 82, I think!) and I CAN'T race up the trail anymore. But, hey, now I've got an excuse -- I'm the Slow Hiker. And I'm good with that. :)

I love the little things in life (even in my job - I was a microbiologist before I quit to be a Mom :) It's the details that excite me, and my photos & art tend to reflect this. I hope these tiny moments of Nature come across as I see them -- epic!
