Me - taking a break from sea glass collecting
That's my mom! I love it when she helps me look for interesting seashells- she has such a good eye!

Chesapeake Bay Sea Glass

Somewhere in Baltimore MD, nestled between a steel manufacturing plant and an old military base, is little town right on the Chesapeake Bay, where my family and I have been collecting Sea Glass for generations.

When my grandfather was growing up, the women in the neighborhood would wash their laundry in tubs outside and throw the soapy suds into the alley that led to the bay. Nicknamed, "Soap Sud Alley," by my grandfather and is the story behind my shop name.

My grandfather often reminisces about lining Coke bottles along the seawall when he was a boy and using them as target practice for his pellet gun. Each bottle shattering into a thousand pieces, right there at the water where they would eventually be found by his granddaughter many decades later.

Even during the cold winter months, my mother, aunt, baby cousin and I make the small walk to the private beach at my grandparents' house, where we find sea glass, pottery, shells, stones and slate. After I carry the heavy glass home, I hand-wash and inspect all the pieces. Then, I carefully select the best pieces, often by size, color and quality, to create beautiful jewelry. The rest is used to create crafts and Soap Sud Alley Sea Glass Potpourri or taken back to the water where it will continue to tumble for the next generation to find.

The sea glass is unaltered and the size and shape is how it was found with the exception of any drilled holes. I do all of the drilling by hand which gives me the freedom to design the jewelry around the sea glass. I love to create unique pieces that compliment and accentuate the sea glass in it's natural state.

Each piece of glass, at one time, was part of a whole. A plate, a medicine bottle, a candy dish or even a taillight...somehow, someway it ended up here in the Chesapeake Bay, where the shards eventually became frosty jewels and are plucked from the rocky shore to be made into truly one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces that are rich in history.

Thank you for stopping by Soap Sud Alley. We want your experience at Soap Sud Alley to be a pleasant one, so please read the following policies to answer any questions or avoid any problems you may have. :)

What is Sea Glass?
Sea Glass are the bits of broken glass from old bottles, containers, vases, etc that were discarded near or in the water. The glass shards are smoothed by the sand, salt water and from the tumble of the waves until eventually the glass has a grainy texture and is no longer sharp. This process takes several decades so all the Sea Glass found today is well over 40+ years old. Rare types of Sea Glass include teal, dark purple, solid white (from milk glass), red, yellow and orange.

What is Sea Pottery?
Like Sea Glass, Sea Pottery started off its journey as broken pits of ceramic like dinner plates, pottery, etc that eventually made its way to the water. There, the sand, salt and surf beat against the sharp edges of the ceramic until the edges were smoothed. Because the outside is often glazed for protection, only the exposed edges wear away leaving the rough ceramic to frame whatever pattern from the original piece is left. One of the most common patterns being blue on white ceramic from antique china.

Nature's way of turning one man's trash into beautiful treasure.
