Ancient Healing, Modern Shamanism

I am a modern mystic, forged in the divine Nature of eastern North Carolina and the Ancestors of Northern Europe. A lifelong intuitive and writer, I publish shamanic memoir, spiritual nonfiction, and new adult magical realism. I've worked with the Elder Futhark for over 25 years. My books "Gift of the Dreamtime," "Teen Spirit Guide to Modern Shamanism," and "Runic Book of Days" are Amazon bestsellers, and I enjoy working with others as a facilitator of spiritual wellbeing.

In the art realm, I enjoy working with odd media, which for me includes runes and spoons--and I didn't even plan that rhyme. They, along with board games, are significant inspirations of my art.

I started working with the Runes when I was 19. They have stayed with me as a spiritual and meditative practice, and I also use them to do divinatory readings for others. They are the most vivid and consistent symbols of power in my life.

I also manage some dubious health conditions, the foremost among them being Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) (#zebrastrong), which radically impacts the availability of my spoons on any given day. For those who manage chronic health conditions, we think of our energy through the metaphor of spoons, called The Spoon Theory, originated by Christine Miserandino. The number of spoons we have denotes the amount of energy available to perform tasks throughout the day. When we're out of spoons, we're out of energy. I'm very active in advocating for the awareness of #invisibleillness, which motivated creating Whimsy Spoons.

Whimsy Spoons Shrines are The Spoon Theory at its most fanciful. Seems crazy to say, yes? Considering The Spoon Theory is a way for those of us who manage chronic health conditions to explain our energy deficits through the metaphor of spoons, I figured why be boring about it. Having dealt with chronic illness for over 15 years, I know my spoons as magickal creatures, so I called out their super secret inspirational powers through Whimsy Spoons Shrines. These aren't your average get-through-the-day spoons, they're mystical-mojo-just-for-you spoons.

How do you use them? When you start feeling like you're out of regular spoons and you need a little whimsy, just go to your Whimsy Spoons Shrine and ask it for mystical mojo. And the mystical mojo is, well... I can't really say, because I made this shrine for you, so it's only going to whisper to you. If I had to guess, though, would be something like ,"You're strong! You're enough! You can do this! And don't strangle anybody in the process!" They appeal to your deepest sense of fun, bring something artful to your life, while honoring what you go through on a daily basis.

I prefer to work with found items, wood, metal, natural fibers and dyes, incorporated into mixed media presentations. I'm happiest when words and fire are involved. My life functions as a walking assemblage of wyrd, so there are often elements of my favorite board games in my creations.

Regarding the runes, themselves, art is just one facet of runework for me. I also write The Weekly Rune ( You can subscribe to it for free, there. If you want the detailed version, check out at Patreon (, and have it delivered to your email before it's published to the public.

I am Kelley Harrell, an inspired spoonie, who moves through everyday with unseen pain, all the while making something beautiful of the experience. There are many spoonies in the world. We're stealthy, motivated, badassed visionaries, and I through my art, I seek to motivate other spoonies.

I'm author of books based in modern soul healing, animism, and the runes. Words, Nature, and Other influence my art. Learn more about my books at, and about my soul work at
