About

Every piece is handmade with love and care by me with inspiration found from nature and art history.

My name is Catherine. You can call me Cat. I am a Mother of three children, two boys and a girl and a companion to my partner of over twelve years. I am the soul artist behind Soul Shine Arts. I created the name many years ago after my love for Warren Haynes song SoulShine. In it he says, "you've got to let your soul shine" and I try everyday through my art and my life. I was a stay at home Mom for over five years and recently went back to work in my other passion, teaching. I teach at Massabesic High School in Waterboro, Maine. It is my towns high school and I could not be happier. I teach all the Ceramics and Painting classes as well as an Integrate Arts course. I'm hoping to add an advanced Ceramics and a fiber arts class next year. I also co direct the theater program at MHS.

I was born and lived my younger childhood in Maine, but truly grew up in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Most of my childhood revolved around art. I was always drawing, keeping sketchbooks and drawing everything from stuffed animals to my cat Ralph and the trees outside. I do not draw as much as I used to, but my love and passion for creating has not changed.

I studied art education and taught a few years in public high school. I will return to it some day, but for now, I focus on my children and my pottery. My hope is for Etsy to help me grow and focus my pottery line.

Soul Shine Arts was started to house my creations in whatever medium I felt like working in. Since 2013, I have focused my art on pottery, but I may sneak some other items in from time to time. Thank you for your interest in me and my work. I hope you continue to check in on me. Join my page on Facebook to keep up on what I'm doing.

From January to June, I will primarily work on this site and creating new work. From June to December I focus on Craft Fairs and try to keep the shop updated.

Welcome to Soul Shine Arts on Etsy! I am a potter. I believe in handmade goods. I have been an artist all my life and am finally in the position to be able to produce what I believe is a quality work of art, whether it be functional or sculptural. All of my work is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe and is glazed in food-safe, lead free finishes.

Accepted payment methods

Payment
We accept Direct Pay through Etsy by credit card, as well as through PayPal. Payment is expected at checkout. There is a 5.5% sales tax for all Maine residents.
Shipping
CHANGES IN THE WORKS: Etsy is in the process of changing the way it handles shipping costs moving toward calculating by weight and zip code upon checkout. However, this is still in the testing stage so even though you are required to enter your zip code, the cost is what was already shown in the listing, which I've calculated to the West Coast. IF YOU LIVE CLOSER TO MAINE, YOUR SHIPPING WILL BE LESS. Please contact me with your zip code to find out the shipping charge to your location.

Please note that I am currently (February 2015) working to recalculated our shipping costs, item by item. We will update costs for shipments within the U.S. using a distant point and either USPS Priority Mail or USPS Parcel Select for heavier items. Your cost may be less. For shipping to Canada, we will now quote USPS First Class International Mail, and for items weighing more than 4 pounds, USPS Priority International Mail.

Please feel free to contact us prior to purchase for the actual cost of shipping to your location. We do not try to make a profit on shipping, and will make the cost right with you. We will refund shipping charges if the excess is $2.00 or more above actual cost. If you are considering multiple purchases, again contact us and we will calculate the total shipping using actual cost (total shipping for multiple items can be significantly less than that quoted). You have no obligation to purchase.

We will ship internationally; however, you must contact us for the shipping cost prior to purchase. We will update the listing with your cost as quickly as possible. We take no responsibility for any additional cost associated with international shipments.
Refunds and Exchanges
If you are not happy with your purchase for any reason, we will accept returns for credit or exchange, but shipping is on you! Any returned item must be received in the same condition as sent. Again, I am a reasonable person, so let me know if you have a problem with your item and I will talk with you to resolve the issue. All of our shipments are insured. If yours is damaged, please let us know quickly.
Additional policies and FAQs
IS YOUR POTTERY FOOD SAFE? CAN I PUT IT IN MY MICROWAVE? WHAT ABOUT MY DISHWASHER?

All of my functional pottery is made for kitchen use. It's lead-free and food safe. You can put it in the dishwasher, microwave, freezer...even your oven! Just avoid sudden temperature changes, like taking a bowl out of the fridge and putting it in a 350* oven or putting a hot dish into a sink of cold water. This is called "thermal shock" and can shatter your piece. All outdoor pieces should be taken in during the cold winter months.

Another note about the microwave...You can put all my pieces in the microwave. Earthenware mugs get very hot and I don't suggest it. Or use a mitt when taking it out of the microwave. Everyone likes to heat at different times. A quick warm up of you coffee for a minute or less will not make the handle of your stoneware mug too hot to handle, but a longer time may. Just be careful and test it out.

I REALLY LIKE THAT VASE, BUT CAN I GET IT IN A DIFFERENT COLOR OR SIZE?

Yes you can, but you may have to wait up to two weeks as it takes time for a lump of clay to become a finished piece. I will likely create several pieces and allow you to choose which one you want. I will also keep you updated on the process if you wish. I will gladly create what you want. Just send me a convo and let me know what you're looking for.

CAN YOU MAKE ME.....?

Yes, probably... I love making pottery and sculptures. If you have an idea and would like to see if I can make it for you, just ask. I was recently asked to make some mugs with anchors on them, so those are in the works now. I can send you sketches or pictures of the process to ensure you like them. There is no obligation to buy. If I like the idea, I'll make them anyway!
