I LOVE these shoes! Customer service is fantastic too, super nice people. I think the shows run a bit small, they were very nice about exchanging them for a larger size, and even hand delivered the replacement pair when they were visiting Brooklyn!

About

Notre Histoire

At its core, Souli & Souli is a creative collaborative effort between local artisans based in Morocco and Ali, Sarah and Michele Souli based in Philadelphia, PA.

Souli & Souli’s history began decades ago, when Ali was a young boy living in Tunisia. His father used to send him to the souks to learn how to hand make leather products- an attempt to keep him out of trouble after school. As his father told him, it’s important to have a trade at hand.

The more modern inspiration for our shop came more recently, when Sarah came back from a family trip in France with a pair of handmade Moroccan babouches. The style and workmanship was excellent, and everybody wanted the same pair. We knew instantly that
we could work with Moroccan artisans to bring our own creative flair to their product. We wanted to bring a hip edge to this traditional style of artistry.

Our products are designed by Ali Souli and handmade in Morocco, and Sarah and Michele further contribute to the shop. Ali travels to Morocco with our partner Abdalwahab Naoui and purchases the kelims, and hand painted leather in villages outside of Marrakech. The leather and suede are bought from tanneries in Marrakech; we buy the raw leather and suede from different tanneries depending on the color. Ali and Abdalwahab bring the raw products to our artisans in Marrakech, and work with them to make sure the kilims, suede and leather are properly combined. Along the way, we are very attentive to our artisans’ input, and we often solicit their advice and ideas.

Our business is based on the principles of fair trade. We pay our artisans their asking price and in advance. Whenever possible, we use up cycled materials.

  • Abdelwahab Naoui

    Assistant

Abdelwahab Naoui is a life long artisan in Souk Balagha, and is our managing partner in Morocco. He works with our artisans when Ali is in the United States. He serves as a connection between Ali and the artisans.

  • Sarah Souli

    Owner

Sarah is Ali's daughter, and helps to manage our Etsy site, as well as our social media outlets. She's the original inspiration for Souli & Souli, after coming home from a trip with a pair of handmade babouches that no one could stop raving about.

Production partners

  • Ibrahim, Old Medina, Marrakech, Morocco

    Marrakesh, Morocco

Ibrahim was the first artisan to join us. He has been specializing in handcrafted leather shoes for over thirty years- a trade passed down from his father. He is extremely proud of his work, and all of his products are handmade, one boot at a time.

  • Said, Old Medina, Marrakech, Morocco

    Marrakesh, Morocco

Said has had a passion for the traditional handicraft of Moroccan goods since, well, he can remember! We’re quite lucky to have Said onboard. Like all artisans, he is extremely proud of his work, and makes each boot by hand one at a time.
