Announcement   I have enjoyed making these pieces for several years now and meeting a lot of new friends all over the world. I look forward to continuing for many more.

Unfortunately, in the short term, my “day job” has changed, and is about to interfere with my woodworking, big-time. Meaning, for several months at least, I will be hard-pressed to find time to devote to it.

I am keeping my Etsy shop open and will add pieces as I can, but my store shelves might get pretty bare at times. I appreciate all my Etsy customers very much, and I hope you will bear with me, and keep me in your “favorites.” With luck, soon I can be back at it, making my little goodies - my birds, turtles, forks, pins and buttons - and continue meeting wonderful people through this unique marketplace.

Thank you for visiting our shop here on Etsy! We offer a unique line of hand-crafted wood pieces handmade here in Southern Oregon. We use beautiful woods including rarely-seen local hardwoods as well as classic and exotic woods from around the world.

If you would like to be notified when we list new items on Etsy, follow us on Twitter @south4th or visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/south4th

All of our woods are sourced from environmentally conscious suppliers. A good portion of the wood we use is collected locally by us from pruning and dead tree/shrub removal.

Please visit our website - www.South4th.com - for more information.

We offer FREE SHIPPING on all US orders. Please see our Policies page and each item's page for details.

About

We love wood.

My name is Steve Elder. Being born and raised in Oregon, wood has always been a part of my life. I've always appreciated its properties, its warmth and texture and its adaptability to so many products that touch all our lives. The fact that wood is a natural and renewable resource makes it a perfect material with few equals.

The forests of the Pacific Northwest contain numerous species of trees, including ponderosa pine, douglas-fir, sugar pine, hemlock, white fir, cedars, oaks, maples, yew, lodgepole pine and dozens more.

Recently my wife Elizabeth and I moved to an area that has a wide variety of flora with the above-mentioned firs, pines, cedars and maples, but also with less commonly used madrone, manzanita and mountain-mahogany. This got me interested in some of these woods that you can't usually find in the stores.

For example, birchleaf mountain-mahogany (cercocarpus montanus, a member of the rosaceae family - not a true mahogany), which is a variety of mountain-mahogany found in our immediate area, is a tree/shrub that has an unbelievably dense beautiful hardwood. I snagged a small piece that a neighbor had pruned. I cut, sanded and oiled it. It was some of the nicest wood I'd ever seen. I did some research and found that mountain-mahogany grows all over the west and that Native Americans used it for tools, war clubs and dyes. Elizabeth (knitter, sewer, weaver - a real fiber arts freak) suggested I make some buttons out of it.

Buttons expanded to shawl pins and to hair sticks and other items. The local woods - mountain-mahogany, manzanita, madrone - expanded to exotic and classic fine woods from all over the world.

I love making these pieces and I hope you enjoy them as well.

Born and raised in Southern Oregon. I've spent my entire life working with wood in some way or another, from splitting it for firewood to making furniture. Making these pins and buttons is the most fun I've ever had with it, though.

Shop policies

Thank you for visiting our shop.

All of our products are handmade and as such are subject to the minor foibles and inconsistencies that all handmade items have.

In most cases the item pictured is the actual item you will receive. Other times, particularly in the case of single pins, sticks and buttons, the item pictured may not be the actual item, but will be representative of it, bearing in mind, of course, that every piece of wood has its own unique color and grain pattern.

Please understand that while we have made every effort to accurately show the items in the pictures, the subtle colors and detail of wood grain are particularly difficult to capture.

We are always adding new items to our Etsy store as the existing items are sold. If you were watching a particular item that sold, or if you were browsing our sold items and something caught your eye, and a similar one isn't currently listed, contact us. We can probably make another. Also, if an item is shown, but not in the type or color of wood you prefer, contact us.

Payment
We accept Paypal.

We accept personal checks and money orders (from United States banks and in US dollars only) made out to the name "Steven Elder". We reserve the right to hold shipping for sufficient time to allow personal checks to clear.

If we do not receive payment, or at least assurance that payment is forthcoming, within a week of the sale we may cancel the sale and put the item back in the store.

There are no sales taxes in Oregon. Any tax liability is the customer's responsibility.
Shipping
FREE SHIPPING TO U.S.!

QUICK SHIPPING
We will attempt to ship as quickly as possible. All items in our store are in stock and will be shipped within 1 to 3 business days. Sometimes after an order has shipped, we forget to check the "shipped" box on the Etsy online invoice, so that is not necessarily accurate. If there ever has to be a delay of more than 3 days before it is shipped, we will email you and let you know. (This has never happened, by the way!)

USPS
We ship via US Postal Service only, so the customer's shipping address must be deliverable to by the Post Office.

CORRECT ADDRESS
PLEASE check your shipping address before placing your order. Make sure that the address entered into Etsy's order form is CURRENT. Depending on the time of day the order is placed, we might ship the order within minutes of receiving it, so there is not always time for an address correction email to reach us. We cannot be responsible for a lost shipment due to an incorrect address being supplied to us.

If the shipping addresses entered in Etsy and Paypal do not match, this may cause a delay in shipping.

FOREIGN ORDERS
---------------------------
Note: Jan 30, 2013. I am sorry to note that I've had to raise the price of shipping on foreign orders. This month the US Postal Service has doubled the price of shipping a typical item. This is in addition to a large increase last year. A 2 ounce package which shipped last year for about $3.00 ($2.00 the year before that!) now typically costs over $6.00 to send.

I wish I didn't have to do this. I am still not charging for the full cost of shipping and the shipping fee is only charged once per order, so multiple item orders will only pay the one fee.

I am always happy to ship overseas and have made a lot of new friends sending these pieces all over the world. I hope it can continue!

Thanks for understanding,
Steve

SHIPPING CHARGE
There is a small shipping charge on items to foreign countries. Please check the shipping details on each item's page before ordering.

CUSTOMS AND VAT INFO - IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ!
We place the necessary customs forms on the package. Any customs fees, duties and VATs are the customer's responsibility and are not included in our shipping charges.

These fees (if any) vary greatly from country to country and change from time to time. If you are not familiar with them, we recommend you investigate your country's customs laws before ordering so as to be aware of any potential liabilities.

If there are customs fees due that are not paid, your order will not be delivered, unfortunately. We cannot refund shipping charges if an item is returned to us due to refusal to pay these fees, and a restocking fee may be applied to cover the cost of return shipping.

Also, please be aware that going through customs can be a substantial source of delay. We generally ship international orders within 1-2 days of receipt (not including weekends; international orders can only be sent Monday through Friday), so be assured we will do all we can to get the items to you in a timely manner, but shipping and customs delays are out of our control.

We are attempting to keep international shipping charges reasonable and ship via US Postal Service First Class Mail. This is the only way to avoid having the shipping charges cost more than the item itself, sometimes several times more. While this has proven quite dependable, it can be inconsistent as far as delivery time is concerned, especially when combined with slow customs handling. We cannot say it will take "X" days to arrive - a package might take 2 weeks to be delivered one time and the same package might take 4 weeks or longer the next.

We are not trying to discourage international orders, quite the opposite - that is why we are working to keep shipping costs so low. We just want you to be aware of the potential delays. If the item is purchased as a gift, for example, give yourself a lot more lead time than you might think.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about international shipping.
Refunds and Exchanges
We want you to be happy. If for any reason you are dissatisfied, please contact us (via the "Contact South4th" link) and let us know so that we can make you happy!
Additional policies and FAQs
When you place an order, we will email an acknowledgment via Etsy Convo. If you don't receive an Convo from us within a few days, feel free to contact us via the "Contact South4th" link on our Etsy page. Rest assured, though, that if the order was completed at the Etsy store, we received it and are processing it.

Please be sure and let us know if your order doesn't arrive in a reasonable amount of time. We pride ourselves on fast shipping - nobody likes to wait - and our feedback is always positive about that. Occasionally shipping glitches happen with the Post Office (or any other shipper) though, so let us know!

We include a fabric storage bag with most of our pins.

Thanks!
