About

Forging ahead.

I opened my Etsy shop on the 17th of September 2011 as a means to support myself after having to leave my regular job in order to train at the National School of Blacksmithing. This was a very hard decision to make and in the end it was made for me when my employers tried to put a stop to my plans for my own future.

I trained at the National School of Blacksmithing in Hereford. Because I had been blacksmithing as a hobby for three years beforehand, I was placed straight through to the second year of the training programme. After my first year there, I won a prize for "Most improved Student", collecting nine straight Distinctions out of the nine possible.

The following year I collected twelve distinctions out of twelve possible as well as getting a prize for "Best Student" from the College, "Best Blacksmith" frorm the Blacksmith school, a "Young Entrepreneur Award" off the FSB for having opened and run my etsy shop while training and having taken the "Stanley Allcard Cup" for the year, which is given by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths - my proudest moment.

Metal itself is my inspiration. I can take the ugliest piece of rusty old iron or purchase the finest steel bar, heat them in the fire and turn them into quite literally ANYTHING. This is the beauty of blacksmithing and one of the many reasons I love my craft so much!

A lot of my ideas come from the natural world: Animals, leaves, plants. I’ll look at images of my subjects and break-down their basic geometry in order to create them with just a hammer and chisel, though I don't consider myself as an artist as art has no function other than to be art. I consider myself a craftsman who creates everyday objects as nicely as he can.

But my main passion is reverse-engineering historical ironwork, from arrowheads to rushlight holders, figuring out how they were created in order to remake them. Eventually I want to reproduce items for museums.

So far, I have sold as far out as the States, Canada, Israel Australia, China Hong-Kong to name but a few!

It has taken a lot of effort, time, tears, blood and sweat in order to reach the stage at which I'm at. Where will I go now? well wherever you guys will lead me, of course!

Welcome to my shop. My Smithy is based in Ellesmere, Shropshire, and I create hand forged items either from my imagination, as commissions or as historical recreations.

It is my aim to create quality hand-forged items and to preserve the traditional craft of blacksmithing.
