WHY EXPOSED SPINE? There are two professional reasons I use this binding technique for my rebound books.
1. Often the old fabric that covers the spine is too fragile
2. Proper technique. Most old books have rounded spines rather than flat. To properly rebind these old books, it's necessary to make a new rounded spine which requires proper training and tools. This method also requires perfectly matching the original spine's width which dictates the page count. While I am trained in the art of rounded spines, I offer exposed spines for rebound work due to its strength and durability as well as the above reasons.
Please beware when buying rebound vintage! If the spine fabric is kept, check to see if the spine is rounded. If the bookbinder created a flat back when the book was originally created with a rounded back, you'll notice the spine fabric is too loose. Unfortunately improper bindings do not last.

It is perfect! Karen was amazing, she even used the font that we asked for, that matched our invitations. Couldn't be happier!

After being a long admirer of Spellbinderie, I splurged to buy a custom guestbook for my upcoming wedding. I couldn't be happier with my book - it's absolutely beautiful! Karen is a true professional - the book is incredibly well made with such attention to detail. Karen was extremely helpful and walked me through every step of the order process/custom design choices. The shipping was fast for an international order - I received the book less than 10 days after Karen notified me of the shipment which was such a great surprise. I am thrilled with my book and can't wait to share it with my wedding guests. It will be a treasured keepsake.

About

The Magical Craft of Binding The Old With The New

Spellbinderie is a unique book bindery located in Lyon, France. All books are professionally bound using rescued antique books, new paper and old word techniques.

In 2010, I relocated from Brooklyn to Lyon with my partner, leaving behind my former career to try something different. Enchanted with books and vintage since a young girl, and desiring to work more with my hands and less with my computer, I chose to learn the art of bookbinding in my new city. During my studies, I often strolled along the Rhone River, enjoying the vintage book markets found along the riverbanks. I was captivated by the absolutely sumptuous French book covers I found and the idea to rebind them with blank paper to create something usable again was born. I focused my attention on binding methods that would work with upcycling and at the conclusion of my studies, opened my studio, Spellbinderie. The blank books in my shop are made from carefully sourced vintage editions and rebound using old world techniques: creasing the paper with a bone folder, hand-tearing the sheets, piercing the sewing stations with an awl and sewing them together with strong linen thread. Spellbinderie guest books, journals and scrapbooks are one of a kind keepsakes that combine the best of the old and the new, making them perfect for once-in-a-lifetime events as well as every day.

Spellbinderie has been featured in numerous blogs and is proud to have been chosen to create the 2011 Etsy Wedding Fair official guest book. Don't hesitate to contact bookbinder Karen Rudd for features or to discuss projects. Custom orders are always welcome!

Page Count & Binding Method

The page count given in listings counts both the front and back of each paper, not individual sheets.

I offer two types of exposed spine bindings, Coptic for smaller light weight books and Raised Support for larger, heavier books. These exposed spine binding offer flexibility and beautiful design options for rebound books. Due to the nature of rebinding old books, the original spine must be destroyed in most cases.

ATTENTION PERSONALIZED ORDERS

•For guestbooks/journals: Your text is due no later than one week prior to your ship by date

•For plaques: Your text is due as soon as you order

Please check your Etsy messages regularly to approve drafts.

Unfortunately text sent later than stated above or not approved in a timely manner may result in a delayed ship by date.

Why can't the original spine be kept as is?

There are two reasons I use the exposed binding for my rebound books.
1. Often the old fabric that covers the spine is too fragile
2. Proper technique. Most old books have rounded spines rather than flat. To properly rebind these old books, it's necessary to make a new rounded spine, not a flat spine. This method also requires perfectly matching the original spine's width which dictates the page count. If the new text block doesn't fit the old spine the way it should, the book will not open and function correctly long term.

I offer exposed spines for my rebound work due to its beauty combined with practicality and most of all to ensure you receive a rebound book that will last.
