Because we could all use a little more color in our lives...
Lauren Steigerwald, the artist behind Spilled Blue Paint, has been painting in both acrylic and resin mediums for nearly a decade. With a passion for aerial seascapes and functional art, Lauren founded Spilled Blue Paint with the intention to share art in new ways, from a statement piece on your wall to the coasters on your table.
How Spilled Blue Paint came to be:
My mom is an art teacher so my training began on our kitchen floor. She’d often sketch me on the backs of restaurant menus with the primary colored crayons they packed in those small boxes for kids. I loved watching her draw, so I’ve always associated art with happiness, calm, and childlike wonder. Time truly stops when I’m painting, and the only things I focus on are color, texture, and space. I know there are four other elements of art, my mom made sure of that, but those three are my favorite because they remind me of those bright colors, waxy texture, and the blank canvas of a paper menu.
I didn’t grow up to be an artist, per se. I moved to San Diego, CA from my hometown of Cleveland, OH for law school. When I wasn’t studying, I was painting, and when I wasn’t painting, I was seeking those bright colors I’ve always loved.
I became an attorney but still remained an artist by weekend. I took on projects whenever I had time and it was one night, when I was working on a large commissioned triptych, that I realized I had spilled blue paint all over my living room floor. It must have happened hours earlier, for I had walked circles around the first floor of my apartment, leaving large, blue footprints behind. My dog, Mako, a puppy at the time, had also walked those same circles, so I found myself with endless footprints and a very blue dog to clean up before my Husband could remind me that I should have put that tarp down we bought specifically for this reason. This was how Spilled Blue Paint came to be. It was 2am, I was doing something I loved, and I was laughing while shaking my head at my own stubbornness. Isn’t that how most good things begin?
Spilled Blue Paint is a dream come true for me. I’ve always gravitated towards works by Van Gogh, Pollock, and Monet, and my goal as an artist is to combine fluid methods with the texture and values found in impressionism and abstract expressionism. I love painting the ocean, and I specialize in abstract aerial beach scenes with gold and copper details. No matter the color story, I love to create depth and movement with multiple layers of resin. It’s my favorite thing in the world to start with an idea and create something new, and I always work with each client to ensure the end result is a piece they’ll enjoy forever.
