About

HandSpuns, HandKnits, HandSewns ... Fine yarns, apparel, and fabrics!

In 1984, we began this apparel business as a sewing and knitting freelancers from the garage of our home in San Francisco, California. We worked with many San Francisco designers doing samplemaking, and patternmaking while at the same time also making custom apparel for a select group of clients. Our clients ranged from coast to coast and included a wide variety of clothing styles. Today, our studio is located in Northern California in the beautiful town of Chico.

For more than 34 years, we have been professionally making clothing and knitwear. Our repetoire includes design, alterations, patternmaking, samplemaking, and apparel manufacturing. We have also had the pleasure (and pain) of raising and processing the fibers from our own spinning flock of many varieties of sheep and Angora goats. We believe that having the ability to process the fibers from the producer to the final product is a very valuable skill. It is also taught us to appreciate the intense labor and love required to make the final yarn or garment. Although we no longer have the spinner's flock, we have moved on to focus exclusively on handspinning yarns and handknitting. It is our goal to expand in the upcoming year and get back to designing woven apparel and home goods.

Spin2knit is the fullfillment of a life long dream of making beautiful, unique yarns, and knitwear designs constructed from a variety of high-quality yarns. A passion for knitting combined with an appreciation of fine handspun fibers are what Spin2Knit is all about!

WASHING WOOL & WOOL-BLEND ITEMS:

Here is our preferred method to wash wool. This is how I have washed fleeces (and yarn) for years---and it works wonderfully for garments, too. It gets everything clean and won’t harm the wool. Remember: DO NOT AGITATE.

1. Fill a large sink or tub with HOT water. Squeeze a tiny dab of Dawn Blue dish soap into the water. Do not agitate to sudsing.
2. GENTLY lay the garment in the hot water and gently press it down into the water. Do NOT AGITATE. Let sit and soak for a whir or until the water starts to cool.
3. Scoop the garment towards you and press gently against the front of the sink. Lift without stretching any parts of the garment. Drain the water.
4. To rinse: Fill sink with water about the same temperature as your drained washing water and GENTLY lay the garment in again. Leave it alone. DO NOT AGITATE!
5. Repeat again if rinse water does not run clear. Add a little bit of fabric softener or hair conditioner to the last rinse for extra softness.
6. Lay the garment flat on a thick towel, roll and press. Do NOT wring. (You can stand on it, just don’t twist).
7. Move it to a second towel if it is a big, heavy item. Roll and press. It will be almost dry to the touch.
8. Take a dry towel and lay garment out flat to dry.

Superwash is more resistant to felting and shrinking, but it, too, will benefit from this treatment. Your Superwash garment will be less likely to stretch and distort.

The color of some yarns and fabrics may run a bit when washed. Small amounts of color residue will not affect the intensity of the yarn’s color. You should wash dyed handspun separately from other garments or with like colors. A splash of white vinegar in the rinse may help with the dye running.

REMEMBER: The better you treat your special garment... the longer it will last!
