Hand Carved Wooden Spoons - Functional Art - Spoons By Jack - Jack Potts, Shop Owner

Hi, my name is Jack Potts, and thank you for visiting my Etsy shop.
I'm a one man shop that offers unique, handmade wooden kitchen utensils from mixing spoons to spatulas and pasta forks. I consider my pieces "functional art". All are meant to be used for cooking and food preparation, but are equally beautiful displayed as pieces of art.

I've been woodworking for close to 70 years, and have done everything from building houses and furniture to making toys and hand carvings.
For the majority of my life, I've been a carpenter and general contractor. After working for over seventy years, I'm just now considering retirement. A few years ago I happened to watch a PBS woodworking show on hand carving Swedish spoons, and thought that making spoons would be a natural extension of what I've done my whole life --- working with wood. It also gives me the opportunity to use my tools without having to climb ladders and crawl around on rooftops! Mostly I get to be creative by carving unique designs in organic and sustainable materials, all of which are locally sourced.
I have given talks and demonstrations on spoon carving at local craft fairs and to woodworking organizations.

Making a spoon takes many steps over a period of several days. First, I hand select each piece of wood from it's raw form (sometimes directly from a tree due to be pruned). At that point I let the piece of wood dictate what it will be, depending on the size, shape and grain. After carving the basic shape, the piece goes through a rough sanding, then several steps of water soaks, drying and more sanding. when I'm pleased with the end result I (at special request) burn my signature into the handle, a food safe finish is applied and it's given a deep polish.
Now it's ready for you to use!
These pieces make wonderfully useful and unique gifts. Perfect for weddings, housewarmings, birthdays, holidays,.... anytime! No chance of someone receiving a duplicate!
I make custom pieces on request and guarantee satisfaction with all of my work. Stop by often to see what's new!
