About

Too many designs ....and not enough time.

Although I can not draw worth a hoot, I still have always enjoyed 'doodling' with pen and paper. I have several sketchbooks filled with all sorts of designs... for wood and other materials.

Over the years I have done woodworking in spurts but the flood of ideas seemed to create a sort of bottleneck ....which seemed to prevent me from completing projects.

In the past I have made boxes, canes, carvings, marquetry, wood turnings and a pipe. But these would come in short bursts of activity and then years would pass before another few pieces were made.

In 2009 I began focusing on wooden spoons... having been inspired by the work of Norm Sartorius and others. A wooden spoon is fairly small but is unlimited in its design possibilities.

Somehow, focusing on mostly spoons seemed to unclog the bottleneck and I have completed more projects in the last three years than all the years that came before.

I have nurtured my creativity and while others mostly think it is innate, I believe that anyone can immensely increase their creativity simply enough.

It gives me a great lift when someone appreciates my work. Even if it doesn't lead to a purchase, there is still that knowing that we connected at some level.

One day I hope to be able to sit and watch some other carvers work and learn some of their 'secrets' for technique and speed. Carving is a slow process for me.... but an enjoyable process. I never know what the end result is going to be... and I enjoy watching it unfold... sometimes taking a 90 degree turn midstream..

Hope you enjoy having a look at my pieces and please visit my webpage at www.spoontaneous.com Thanks!

I grew up in an orphanage from age 6 through finishing high school. During high school I was able to take one art class.... but showed absolutely no promise at all. Studied Landscape Design in college and learned a few basic design principles.
