Sweet Love
Spun Light got it's start in a very simple, and unintended, way. I (co-owner Kate) was looking for the perfect birthday gift for my boyfriend (co-owner Nick). We met in 2008 at a geology field camp through the University of Arizona, but I was living in New Orleans and he was in Tucson. Long story short, we stayed in touch as pen pals and lived our separate lives until I moved to Tucson in 2011.
Anyway, we'd been dating for about 9 months and I wanted to get him the perfect birthday gift to show him how much I cared and I'd heard he had a fascination with cotton candy, so I got him a tiny countertop cotton candy machine. The way his face lit up is something I won't forget.
The thing about my relationship with cotton candy is that I never really loved it, especially as I got older and knew it was basically just sugar with artificial flavoring and (potentially worse) artificial dyes. But I wanted to eat it too, so I refused to go the normal route of sour apple and blue raspberry (whatever that nonsense is). Nick felt more or less the same way, so we started experimenting with making all sorts of our own flavors - 20 in the first week! Trust me, not all were winners. Lavender took a lot of attempts to perfect, at worst it made me feel ill and at best, well you'll have to try it yourself. Looking back it was an instant obsession for both of us.
We shared our creations with friends and family, everyone was amazed. Our first event spinning cotton candy was a short 6 weeks later at the Sacred Machine Gallery (RIP) and it was such a hit I knew from then on I'd devote myself to sweet simple cotton candy - done in a way that I can ethically stand behind, with organic cane sugar and all natural flavorings. Of course we had to make things complicated by having over 55 flavors. But that's what makes it fun for us. I just wish I could see your face when you try it the first time.
Now Nick and I are married and look forward to creating a sweet life together.
