About

We make stamps specific for marking into clay.

We make custom stamps and rollers made special for marking clay. We don't just make rubber stamps that "kind of work" for clay. We use materials that hold crisp detail for marking nice deep marks in clay. Our clay stamp making process was developed by artist Joel Socwell while he studied ceramics at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. This special process uses a laser to cut designs into a durable stamp tool. As a service to the clay artist community, Joel now offers this process for transferring design into an easy to use clay tool.

Our first tools were all made of maple wood, and they work well for ceramic clay. But as time went on more detail was wanted and Joel developed our trademark Signature Writer (R) Surface with special pewter handle that can hold about 3X the detail of a regular wood stamp. Those stamps are usually made for custom designs needed by professional potters or artists working in PMC. They work well small for a tools to decorate the clay surface or as a maker's mark (chop) to identify your work. But in recent years we are making quite large stamps (up to 5" or about 125mm) with logos for events or businesses usually made for mugs.

We do not recommend rubber stamps for deep marks into clay, but we do also make rubber stamps for transfer of underglaze onto bisqueware. We can make any of our stock stamps designs into rubbers stamps to work with undergalze pad or ink pad. Just ask us for this special surface to be made as needed. Most of what we do is custom, so just let us know what you need.

Generally our stamps do not wear out by stamping in clay, the most common wear comes from drops on the floor or impact of other kinds on the fine details in the surface. We offer 2 options for stamp repair that break after a fall.

1. You can return the stamp to us and we will fix it for free if you just need the surface re-attached. You pay only for shipping to us, we will pay return shipping by first class mail.

Please ship the stamp to be fixed along with any notes to the following address:

Socwell LLC
PO Box 719
Whitewater, WI 53190

2. If your surface is damaged (bend or broken letters etc.) We can repair your stamp in most cases, or completely remake the surface if needed. The job number is all we need to be able to repair your stamp to be an exact match of the original. We try to limit the cost of the repair, so we basically do the labor and machine time for free. However, we do charge a flat repair fee based on size to cover some of our out of pocket costs like return shipping and materials. Most of the time we suggest that you return the stamp to us so we can use our tools and process to repair it, that has the best chance for success just because we work with this process every day.

Here are the repair fees by size that we ask for.

1.5" or smaller - $10 USD
2.5" or smaller - $20 USD
3.5" or smaller - $30 USD
Over 3.5" size - $40 USD

Probably the easiest way is to return the stamp and include a check with it for the repair fee. Please ship the stamp to be fixed along with any notes to the following address:

PO Box 719
Whitewater, WI 53190

Frequently asked questions

Care instructions

Be careful not to drop the stamp on a concrete floor, while the surface will last for thousands of imprints into clay it might only survive one hard smack on a concrete floor. This is especially true if your stamp has thin border lines around the edge or fine text lettering.

Use a soft toothbrush to clean your stamp if needed.

Wash you stamp in COLD water. For larger wood handle stamps, hot water can cause an expansion problem with the wood that can cause the surface to de-laminate from the handle base. Cold water helps to prevent this, but still should not be allowed to sit in a bath of water or heaven forbid the dish washer!

Custom and personalized orders

To create a custom stamp we usually provide a proof by e-mail first before we produce anything. To setup a proof layout to confirm we can make what you want we need the following information:

1. Artwork or text needed?

2. The size of the mark you want?

3. e-mail address to send the proof layout?

Wholesale availability
