Love love love my David Bowie Hunky Dory artwork! It combines two of my fave things...books and DB. If I can find other walls in my house I would like to come back for more!! Would recommend this seller.

About

Standard Designs, like so many things in life, began with Jean-Paul Sartre.

I realised one day that I hadn't drawn anything in several years. Shocking, I thought - all that effort in art school that I put into trying to avoid drawing class, when I could have just let it slide like this naturally.

It just so happened that at that moment was I researching an article about Jean-Paul Sartre. My inkpen and nib set was in a box within arm's reach. Paper was more of a problem - I had to get out of my seat for that. But art is, of course, worth the struggle. An hour or so later I'd come up with the drawing you see in my profile picture (and also in the Portraits section of this shop). I enjoyed its quickfire, devil-may-care approach to line, tone and the possibility that it might actually look like Sartre. I knew I was onto something. I scribbled a gag about his famous 'Hell is other people' line at the side and - bingo! Standard Designs was born.

Since then I've been creating prints that reflect my love of literature, music, art, design and the occasional awful pun. I hope you find something here you enjoy too.

Frequently asked questions

What frame did you use in the photos of your albums-as-books prints?

It's IKEA's 40 x 50cm RIBBA frame. It comes with a card mount/mat that has a window opening that's the ideal size for my prints. It's available wherever there's an IKEA - just Google "IKEA 40 x 50 RIBBA" and you'll find it.
