My Story: Art and Recovery

Communication comes in many forms and I use abstract painting to express what is hidden inside. My life, similar to my art, has been a series of ups and downs, mistakes, and learning experiences. My paintings are what I call “a visual recovery journal” as I continue to battle PTSD from surviving multiple acts of violence without justice.

Healing begins with reclaiming my voice, and by exhibiting my paintings I am able to reach people at a personal level. It is a cathartic process for me, and it changes the negative actions that I endured into something beautiful. It’s a way to pick up the pieces, and to reveal that in my heart love always wins.

I paint intuitively from my home studio in the Minneapolis area, and my mood dictates the size, the colors, and any special effects. I do not plan what I’m about to paint; in fact I have no clue what will emerge. I use acrylic paint and I tend to include many mixed mediums to achieve various moods in my work.

My honesty about my mental health battle with PTSD has opened doors for me to be heard on a much larger scale. I collaborated with St. Paul photographer Ellie Leonardsmith for her book “What We Hide” which exposes diverse stories that are so personal that they are hidden from everyday conversation.

That opportunity led to public speaking on the topic of mental health and trauma. I had my first TV interview with KSMQ, PBS affiliate, for the show “Off 90.” You can hear the anxiety in my voice during the interview as I talk about art and recovery. It shakes, but I spoke. To me that is symbolic of strength and how far I’ve come. For decades I couldn’t verbalize what I had endured.

I have been honored to showcase my work throughout Minnesota. I have been featured at art galleries: The MacRostie Art Center, The Schroeder Gallery, and at Block Studios, along with forty other venues. I proudly sell my original paintings on Etsy, too:

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

At this time I am not accepting custom orders.

Care instructions

All of my paintings are coated with a protective, non-yellowing varnish. To dust art use a feather duster or a slightly damp cloth. Avoid direct contact with sunlight or contact with cleaning solutions.

If storage is needed protect the front and the backside with cardboard and lay flat to prevent the frame from warping or the canvas from getting punctured.

If the canvas is loose dampen the backside with a spray bottle and it will shrink the fabric so that it’s tight as a drum.

It’s best to display and store art in a temperature controlled environment.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Every painting comes wrapped in two layers: the first is protective glassine paper. The second layer is either natural Kraft paper or holiday-neutral gift wrap. This is complimentary.

Typically a ribbon is added along with my product label.

Wholesale availability

Yes- but only if you are local to the Twin Cities region. Please contact me BEFORE purchase for a local wholesale price. I work with local designers and I am able to reduce the price of the art for those who are able to pick-up the work from me personally. Please email me for more information:
