About

She is His Star, and He is her Gold

Hello! My name is Andrea and I'm a Catholic and a self-taught artist, embroiderer, and writer. Welcome to StellaMarigoldArt!

"Stella" refers to "Stella Maris," or "Star of the Sea," a title for the Blessed Mother Mary which is appealing to a Gulf Coast resident like myself. "Marigold" refers to the flower, which in medieval gardens symbolized "Mary's Gold." On my original business card was a painting of the Blessed Mother and the Infant Jesus, with the phrase: "She is His star, and He is her gold." I hope that my religious items can (even in a tiny way) help me and my customers and their loved ones seek a real relationship with the light and treasure of life. Although my scapulars and badges are hand-made and as such should be treated gently, I do my best to make them as sturdy as possible, and I choose my materials carefully (100% woven wool, 100% Merino wool felt, high-quality cotton DMC thread, and polyester/rayon/nylon/synthetic silk cord--every inch personally inspected for weak sections). Thank you for visiting! God bless you!

WHAT IS A SCAPULAR?
The word "scapular" comes from the Latin word for "shoulder." Scapulars originated as parts of monastic habits, where they usually took the shape of large pieces of cloth without markings, unlike the familiar "small scapulars," which I sell. Small scapulars consist of two panels of woolen cloth that are connected by two cords and worn over the shoulders so that one panel rests on the chest and the other on the back.

Scapulars are sacramentals (prayers, actions, or items which, through the prayers of the Church, can assist us in receiving God's grace by inspiring us to think of God, to pray, etc.). Some scapulars (particularly the "Brown Scapular") are associated with phrases such as, "Whosoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire." But it is very important to remember that the efficacy of the scapular depends on the faith and intentions of the wearer. Scapulars are not magic amulets or lucky charms. I like to think of the scapular as a "physical prayer," or like the heraldry of the medieval knights. By wearing the insignia of their Lord and Lady the knights expressed a commitment to follow a certain kind of life. This is what we are doing by wearing the scapular.

You should have your scapular blessed by a priest. If it is your first scapular, you can ask the priest to "invest" you in the scapular (different types of scapular has a different investment; for some scapulars no investment is necessary). Only the first scapular you wear needs to be blessed—when your current scapular wears out, your commitment continues to the replacement. You can dispose of the old scapular in a respectful way (usually by burying or burning it).

I encourage anyone who wishes to wear the Brown Scapular to read about its history and how to become enrolled. Here are a few helpful links:

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
DMC describes its Cotton Embroidery Floss as “100% colorfast and fade resistant.” However, dark colors, such as reds, are prone to bleeding when wet. I wash all my threads and felts in water and white vinegar to reduce the risk of bleeding and shrinkage. However, because of the delicate nature of hand-embroidery, you should only wash your scapular or embroidered medal by hand. To do so, fill a bowl with cold water. Add a very small amount of mild soap (such as liquid dish soap) to the bowl. Soak your scapular in the bowl. Do not scrub it, just swish it back and forth gently. After a few minutes, refill the bowl with clean water and rinse the scapular until it is no longer soapy. Remove it from the bowl and gently pat or press out the excess water. Let scapular dry on flat surface (out of the sun to avoid fading). If white threads have become yellowed, you can try lightening them by applying a mild solution of water and white vinegar with a Q-tip, and then rinsing thoroughly.

RETURNS
I want you to be happy with your purchase! If an item is damaged, was misrepresented by me, or if something is missing from your order, please contact me within 14 days of receiving the package and I will make good the mistake! Please note, however, that because my scapulars are modified for the buyer (by customized cord lengths), I do not accept returns or issue refunds/exchanges for orders where no error was made on my part. Returns for other items may be possible—just contact me within 14 days of receiving the item and I will do my best to help you!

RETURNS - EU
Under the EU’s distance selling laws, buyers have the right to return certain products for any reason by contacting the seller within 14 days. If you are in EU and wish to return an item, you must contact me within 14 days of receiving it. You will need to pay return shipping, but once I have received the item, I will reimburse you for the whole payment, including the original shipping charges.

REPAIRS
I am unable to offer repairs for scapulars at this time, and I do not accept items back to alter them. Please choose your scapular cord length carefully!

CANCELLATIONS
If you wish to cancel a scapular order, please contact me as soon as possible. Once I alter the panels by sewing in the cord lengths of your choice, cancellation is no longer possible. For other items, as long as I haven't shipped the order, you may cancel it and receive a full refund (including shipping costs).

DIGITAL ITEMS
Digital items are sent immediately, so they cannot be returned or cancelled. However, if you have a problem with the files, I will do my best to solve it! My digital items are sold as PDF files (sometimes in "zipped" form). They can be viewed by pdf readers such as Adobe Reader and Apple Preview. If this format does not work for you, I am happy to send JPG files to your email address! Copyright and reproduction rights do not transfer with digital sales. Please read the detailed copyright information provided with each listings.
Shipping
SHIPPING UPGRADES
I ship orders by USPS First Class Mail (2-5 days delivery, not "guaranteed"). If you would like to upgrade shipping, please contact me before making your order!

PLEASE CHECK YOUR ADDRESS
I use Etsy Shipping Labels for all orders. Etsy automatically selects the shipping address listed in your account, so please make sure that address is correct!

TRACKING
Etsy Shipping Labels provides a tracking number for each order. You will receive the number in a notification email after your package is shipped. If an item is lost (and I have only ever had one package get "lost," and it did eventually turn up!) I will do my best to resolve the situation fairly, including sending a refund if necessary.

PROCESSING TIME
Please allow 1-4 weeks for scapulars to ship. I need time to sew in the cords, and I don't want to disappoint you by missing a shipping deadline. However, as I do work quickly, most orders are shipped within 2-7 days!

EU / INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS
Custom practices in your home country may cause extra fees, taxes, and delays in receiving your order. These practices are beyond my control, so I am unable to refund fees or to provide information about them. I mark my custom packages as "embroidered cloth / textile." If VAT taxes apply to your order, Etsy will calculate them and add them at check-out.

CUSTOM ORDERS
I LOVE working on custom orders! It is a joy to make something so significant to another person. My commission process is as follows:

1) You may request a design from my collection or, if you have something special in mind, I can create new "just for you" designs for you to choose from!

Check out my Flickr page below for design ideas!
https://www.flickr.com/photos/79338779@N03/sets/with/72157656104479432

2) After you choose a design, I will give you a price estimate. I give a range (EX: $50-70) based on the work-hours the item takes to make (currently I charge $12/hour. You will never be charged more than the estimate, but if my estimate is too high, I will adjust the price down.

3) If my commission list is full, I will give you an estimate as to when I can begin working on your item. The waiting period may be weeks or months, but I am committed to working quickly, and I will keep you updated. During the actual sewing process, I try to send "in progress" photos and updates frequently.

4) When the item is finished, I will create a listing which you can use to make the purchase. I don't require down-payments before starting work.

5) You are never obliged to purchase a special commission. I know life can bring sudden financial changes. Also, if necessary, I can reserve a commissioned item until a time when you can purchase it.

6) Designs I have embroidered are my designs, even if customized for a specific buyer; I retain the rights to reproduce any design, and to offer for general sale (complete or modified) custom orders that are not purchased by the original commissioner in a timely manner (within 30 days after I send the purchasing listing to the original customer - if you need more time, please contact me!)

7) My embroidered items are religious devotional items. Please don't commission them if you don't intend to use it for devotional purposes!

8) I don't often accept artwork commissions, but please feel free to ask if you have something in mind!

Thank you so much! Just let me know if you have any other questions about commissions!

CHILDREN AND SCAPULARS
Scapulars should not be given to children without supervision. As in the case of any item that goes around the neck, please exercise appropriate caution when working around machinery or in any other situations where wearing a scapular might lead to injury.

In all other cases, I will not contact you via your personal email unless you request that I do so.
