Announcement    May 2021 Shop update: Thank you for your interest in my shop! When not woodworking, I teach geology at Sacramento State University (@SacStateGeo). During the pandemic, I’ve been scrambling to keep up with redesigning my lectures, labs, and activities for online, distance-learning formats. Unfortunately, this effort has effectively absorbed all of my time. I look forward to getting back into the shop as soon as possible, but it’s likely that I won’t have an opportunity to do so until at least the end of the summer.

Good things are coming! While I haven’t made much sawdust lately, I’ve been brainstorming ideas and have a number of projects that I am itching to get started on. If you would like me to notify you when I’m able to start working again, please consider sending me a message (through Etsy or by email to strainshadow [!at] gmail.com) and I will make sure to keep you in the loop. Rest assured that I will not sell or share your contact information.

Combining art & geology for your classroom, office, and home

One of the most challenging spatial concepts for geology students to master is visualizing how planar geologic surfaces (e.g., layers of bedding, fault surfaces, & tabular intrusions) in various orientations interact with the curviplanar topographic surfaces of valleys & ridges. In geologic parlance, these relationships are collectively referred to as the Rule of Vs because of the characteristic, v-shaped patterns produced by these interactions. Unfortunately, there are surprisingly few physical tools available to help students with these spatial concepts. Indeed, the last quality geologic block models built expressly for this purpose were made by Thomas Sopwith in the mid 1800’s. To address this need, I started building a modern version of the famous Sopwith models in 2018 to help my Structural Geology students learn the rule of Vs. When not being used in a classroom, these blocks look beautiful on desks or bookshelves and make wonderful gifts for lovers of science, geology, and the Earth.

I use Tried & True Original Wood Finish on my wooden block models. This excellent blend of linseed oil and beeswax is non-toxic, provides excellent protection, and truly brings out all of the colors in exotic hardwoods.

This finish also makes it very easy to repair any scratches, nicks or water marks. Please visit Tried & True at the link below for specific instructions on how to rejuvenate your blocks
