About

Beautiful handmade watercolors

Hi everybody and welcome to Studio Artisjok!

Based in Rotterdam, Studio Artisjok is a small and independent artstudio where artisanal watercolors are made.
Because of my love for the earth, art and beautiful colors, I decided a year ago that I wanted to make my own watercolors with pigments that are not toxic and a binder that consists of only natural products like gum arabic, distilled water and locally produced honey.

I love making these colors so much, and I want to share that love with you!

So how are the colors made?

During the production of our watercolors pigment is mulled by hand on a glas slab with a combination of gum arabic, distilled water and locally produced honey. Honey is added to help the paint retain water and increase their longevity.

We make our own binder, using pure lumps of gum arabic. These raw crystals are dissolved in distilled water for about 48 hours. Then we filter the solution by hand 4 times, to remove all impurities.
All of our handmade watercolors contain as much as 50/50 raw pigment to binder ratio. They are poured by hand into the pans into layers, allowing each layer to dry over the course of 2 to 3 weeks, so the pans are fully packed with beautiful watercolors.

We use no fillers, brighteners, or dispersants (plasticizers) and all of our colors are single pigment paints. With single pigments there are no surprises. And they mix beautifully with other colors.

Why are some of the watercolors sticking to the paper when opening?

It is completely normal for some of the handmade paints. Because all of our watercolors only contain pure ingrediënts, they can be a bit fickle. They are the so called sticky paints. And although they are sticky, they still work like a charm!

- Peel of the paper gently
- If the paper is picking up some of the paint from the pan, use a (pallet) knife or toothpick to pick up te paint and put the paint back in the pan.

Although most of our used pigments are not considered toxic, you should take care when disposing paint.
Also, these paints are not suitable for children.

Why don't I get a Track and Trace number?

Almost all of our mail can fit into a padded mailer. In the Netherlands you'll only get a track and trace number when sending an envelop as registerd mail. It's more expensive, especially international mail.
If you like us to send it as registerd mail, let us know before you order, and we will let you know what the extra costs are.

I live nearby, can I pick up my paint?

Yes, that's possible. But let us know before you order! Just send us a message and we will arrange it.

Why are the bigger tins only sent to the Netherlands?

The bigger tins are heavier than the smaller tins, sending them outside the Netherlands is quite expensive (from 9 euro, depending on where you live), especially if you fill them with pans. It might be cheaper for you to find the tins in the country you live in.
If you really want to buy a bigger tin from us, send us a message and we will let you know what it will cost.
