5 out of 5 starsThis mug is so beautifully crafted, and I love the details such as the art continued on the bottom of the mug and the artist’s stamp at the base of the handle. Feels great in hand. Just wonderful. Thank you!

A few goats and chickens and a lot of pottery
I once took a pottery class when I was studying for a fine arts degree in college. This is where most potters say something like: "I fell in love with the clay" or "I never looked back" or "I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life." It wasn't like that for me. I spent hours trying to make a pot on the potter's wheel. My hands were scraped and bloody from the clay and wheel and there were more than a few tears. Even worse, I had a teacher who didn't try and spare anyone's feelings. If he thought a pot was bad, he threw it on the floor. To my credit, he did say that I had a great sense of form. Still, I ended up dropping the class out of sheer frustration.
Fast forward several years and I found myself living in France because my husband's company sent us there for seven years for his job. While there, I had to find activities to get involved with that would help me learn the language and culture, so I signed up for a pottery class at a local community center. I still ended up with a bad-tempered instructor and had a lot of frustration, but I finally did fall in love with the clay. Being in that class helped me with language skills but more often than not, the conversation around me was forgotten while I deeply focused on my pottery.
When we returned to Virginia, I continued working with ceramics by taking an intensive yearlong Production Pottery program at Tidewater Community College. Surprisingly, the instructor was very friendly and he emphasized good design and fine craftsmanship over purely production values.
Now I live in Upstate New York on a 50-acre farm and my studio is in my home. Pottery is a part of my life. When I'm not making pots, I spend the time taking care of my 4 very cute but somewhat naughty and very spoiled miniature goats and a small flock of 10 beautiful chickens.
As an individual potter, I work very hard at all aspects of my craft, starting with preparing the clay and glazes, all the way to marketing, packaging and shipping. I use very basic equipment: a sturdy potter's wheel, an electric kiln for firing and a few simple tools for carving, smoothing and trimming. Mostly I use my hands and lots and lots of time. I try to avoid toxic materials for my health and that of my customers. My raw materials mostly come from the earth and will go back there some day. I just pretty it all up a little.
