About

This is My Story

My obsession with sewing started a little over a year ago. The not-so-random convergence of events that came together to put me on this path make me think maybe it was the universe jumping up and down frantically waving its arms shouting "Hey Kim! Over here! Here is your passion! Look. This. Way!!"

I've been crocheting since I was a little girl. I've always loved all things crafty. I even remember wishing that there was a job I could do when I grew up that consisted of crafting all day long. But in my family hard work was the key to a good life and it didn't matter if you loved your work. You just did it. So as much as I loved to create... there was always something more important that I had to do.

Being a young mom and struggling to take care of kids on my own made it even harder to consider having a truly creative life. I had my moments along the way. A new scheme here and there that would help me make some money and maybe give me a little happiness. But I never took them or myself seriously enough, so they always just fell by the wayside.

I first discovered Etsy right around the time that it had just started up and I said to myself "Self... I'll crochet some stuff and see how it goes". I was pretty surprised at how well it went. I started getting some custom orders and even orders to remake some of the things I had already sold and while you'd think that would be a good thing, that's when I lost my interest. I found crochet-for-pay to be too daunting and repetitive a task. There was no joy in it for me, it was just... work.
So, once again I closed up shop, decided my creative endeavors were just a little girls pipe dream and got a job working from home building websites and helping to manage a consulting business.

And for the past 8 years that has been my life. It's been a pretty good 8 years. I mean, I've had my trials and tribulations but in that time I've gained a tremendous amount of stability, a deeper sense of responsibility, I've gotten to know and truly grow myself and I've gotten to watched those boys that I struggled so hard to raise grow up to be incredible and deeply inspiring men and I'm still raising a girl who lets me see a little more every day the strong and compassionate woman she is going to become. I'd say I'm pretty lucky.

But back to that random convergence...
About 3 years ago my mom decided she wanted to take up sewing. Sewing was always one of those things I *wished* I could do but found it wayyy too intimidating to try. Some months later she decided sewing just wasn't for her and offered to sell me her machine. Being someone who can't turn down a good price on craft equipment - I took her up on it. Around the same time my daughter wanted a Halloween costume that we couldn't find in any of the stores AND I had just met an amazing artist who had a ridiculous amount of hobbies... one of them being sewing.
So, I had the machine, I had the motivation and I had a great source for learning it all, all at the same time.
Yea.. it was totally the universe.

I made my daughters dress in ONE night and completely fell in love. And since then I have spent every free moment delving deeper into this art, learning every nuance and constantly practicing, determined to develop my own style and master this craft.

Its been an incredible trip.

How do I know this won't be like the great crochet debacle of '02? I've gotten several large orders from local groups like the Derby Girls and while it was indeed repetitive - I couldn't get enough!
Each measurement, cut, stitch and mistake was a chance to work harder, learn more and get one step closer to mastering this incredible passion of mine.

In my lifetime I have discovered that the key to real joy is having a humble, compassionate and sincere heart. Its a lot of practice and a lot of work. But its completely worth it.
