About

SugarplumSilhouettes Scherenschnitte

This little shop was opened in the winter of 2011 so that I could display and sell the pictures I have been making for many years. All designs are original and are available as papercuttings, cards, or prints. I do this for fun, and because I have to. When a design comes to mind I have to cut it out of paper. The design usually insists. If it doesn't, it usually gets thrown away, because designs have a life of their own. If they don't want to be developed, I can't make them. If they do, I can't stop them.

Scherenschnitte, or scissor cuts, is a very old German craft that began in the 1500's, was revived by Queen Victoria in the 1800's and concurrently kept alive and well by the Pennsylvania Dutch in America. The trick of this craft is to cut away all parts of paper not wanted so that the picture emerges while the paper stays whole. The design is drawn on the reverse of the silhouette paper and then cut out with an x-acto knife. To do this successfully all parts of the design must interconnect. (Otherwise you end up with a heap of scraps!) Look carefully at my work and you will see what I mean.

Thanks for looking in!

SugarplumSilhouettes is my shop of carefully hand-cut, all original designed-by-me paper cuttings. I loved these sorts of illustrations when I was a child and taught myself how to make them so I could bring my own visions to life.

Welcome to SugarplumSilhouettes, a store that offers original cut-paper silhouettes made by an Old World craft known as Scherenschnitte. Each item is created by sketching the design on acid-free card stock and then cutting the entire image out as a whole, leaving a perfect silhouette. All elements of the design must touch to maintain the integrity of the cutting. Tricky business when using sharp tools! The process can take many hours or even days to complete. The silhouette is then mounted on another sheet of contrasting acid-free card stock to complete the effect.

Please don't hesitate to contact me through Etsy Conversations or e-mail for any questions or requests. I will be glad to work with you! Personalized and custom orders are welcome. Most items you see in the shop can be ordered as greeting cards with a ten card minimum order.

All the materials I use are of the best; acid-free, archival quality; packaged and shipped with care and concern. I want you to be happy with your purchase now and for many, many years to come.
