Announcement   Everything in my shop was meticulously created by me in my home studio in Elmvale, Ontario, Canada.

My work is shiny, glittery, magical mixed media paintings on canvas. They are comprised of painted paper dolls, with paper dresses, that usually have 3D details such as tulle skirts, lace trim, jewelled bindis, handfuls of pearls and bodices laced with real thread. All of my pieces have glittered, metallic backgrounds and they are all sealed with a thick, glossy varnish that gives them a layered, finished look – like the glossy metallic finish on a car (that’s unfortunately very difficult to photograph, but I try my best).

I use many different types of glitter in my pieces: standard, fine glitter; short, tinsel-shaped glitter; chunky glitter; flaked glitter; hexagonal glitter, and sometimes iridescent hearts or stars in various colours, all of which shimmer and shine in different ways when covered with the epoxy-like varnish I use.

Thematically my girls are fantastical, generally being fairies, angels, mermaids or pretty girls in ball gowns who are not unlike princesses. Most of the paintings I make are intended to enchant children, however most of those who collect my work (to date) are adults.

(Here's a short video I made to show how they sparkle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ndudc9kjknc )

Thank you for your continued support! And YES I happily ship internationally! Also all paintings, except where noted, come with a saw tooth hanger on the back for easy hanging.

About

Welcome to a World of Glitter Girls and Shimmer Boys!

Primarily an agoraphobic writer, Sunny Crittenden delved into the world of visual artistic expression in 2004 at the urging of her mother (Lori-Anne Crittenden of A Simpler Time: http://www.facebook.com/asimplertime), husband and a wealthy benefactor who kept her in a constant supply of canvasses, paint and various other mediums to experiment with. These experiments, posted on Sunny's blog, were met with positivity by her online cheering section, which lead to the founding of Sunnyland Studio the umbrella which Sunny's been creating under ever since.

However, in 2006 tragedy struck and Sunny was hospitalized due to a psychotic break, to be eventually diagnosed with bipolar I and generalized anxiety disorders. As she puts it, psychosis was "like being trapped in [her] own imagination" and as a result, she became afraid to use her imagination at all for fear of becoming psychotic again and she became reluctant to create for many years afterward.

With the help of a highly skilled psychiatrist, her friends both online and off, the encouragement of fellow artists, and a pharmacopoeia of "brain drugs", Sunny has once again found her creative voice.

In 2008, after a lot of practicing and failed attempts, Sunny finally mastered the design and techniques used in her Glitter Girls and Shimmer Boys paintings, which she's been specializing in ever since. Only using the finest quality materials - from the glitters themselves, to the hand-dyed papers, right down to the varnish - Sunny takes about 2-3 weeks to complete a 12 x 12 inch painting from beginning to end, not counting procrastination, which is a very important component in Sunny's artistic process.

Inspiration comes from everywhere, from the sparkly dresses and smiles on Toddlers & Tiaras, to movies and music and even people, but what inspires Sunny the most is the materials she works with. What may look like a pressed leaf to you, may look like a fairy wing to Sunny. Tiny beads become pearl necklaces. Small jewels become bindis or the crystal on the end of a Fairy Queen's sceptre. Pulpy mulberry paper becomes angel wings. Downy marabou becomes the fluffy trim on a snow fairy's gown.

What sets Sunny apart is her masterful use of glitter, her attention to detail and in a vast sea of Caucasian folk art girls, Sunny's "girls of colour" definitely stand out from the crowd.
