About

Luxury Jewelry that is Globally Inspired, Locally Created and Geometrically Meaningful!

Welcome to my newest shop, Surayya Design! I have been an active Etsy member for many years through my other profile, where I began experimenting with jewelry-making and created the shop Style Hybrid: www.etsy.com/shop/stylehybrid.

Now many years later, I am ready to open my second shop, Surayya Design, that carries the same spirit and aesthetic as its more affordably-priced sister, but with more refinement and luxury quality.

Having studied comparative literature across cultures as well as art and fashion design, a global outlook often inspires my aesthetic. I love finding commonalities between different cultures. I am in constant awe of geometric designs, whether they cover the surface of a Moroccan building or emerge from the intricate weave of a Japanese bamboo basket.

I think of any creative pursuit primarily as the marriage of disparate ideas and that inspires my own approach. I especially love playing match-maker between ornate and minimalist designs and between traditional and modern techniques.

I chose the name Surayya (meaning "star" in Arabic, Farsi and Hindi) because it captures my main inspirations: The rich aesthetic traditions of the Middle East, North Africa, Persia, Turkey, South and Southeast Asia. As these cultures blended over centuries under various influences, such as the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal empires, geometric designs evolved in the hands of diverse artisans while remaining united by the meaning of spiritual transcendence.

I want this message of diversity and unity to reflect in my work, promote cross-cultural understanding, and inspire inner peace in its wearers. Thank you for visiting, and I hope you find something you love!
