TV Meteorologist turned Mommy / Jewelry-maker :)
Social Encore: Surfer Girl Jewelry drops in
BY JERMEL-LYNN QUILLOPO / Special to the Star-Advertiser
As someone who works multiple jobs, I’m often fascinated by other people who do the same. A co-worker of mine at Hawaii News Now, Malika Dudley, is one of those women. She’s not only a weekend weather anchor, but also one of Hawaii’s newest business owners with the launch of Surfer Girl Jewelry.
Dudley’s fascination with making jewelry started during the 2010 holiday season, when her fiancé paid for jewelry classes as a gift. After her first class, she was hooked; being able to be funnel her creativity through her hands became therapeutic to her. She started to make jewelry for family and friends and received such a huge response from friends on Facebook that she turned her hobby into a small business.
The former Miss Hawaii is not your ordinary pageant girl. Dudley has lived in Paris and Lyon in France along with Hilo and Honolulu, and currently resides in Waimea. She speaks French with her mom, and her father is an oceanographer and tsunami expert. As a certified meteorologist and avid surfer, she has certainly inherited the love of the ocean from her dad — and draws upon it in her budding career a jewelry designer.
Dudley collects shells from across the state, both underwater and on the sand. Always inspired by the ocean, she wanted to make jewelry pieces that other surfer girls could identify with.
“Most recently, I made my fiance Kaimi’s wedding band,” she said. “After I create these pieces initially, I then build upon the original designs, changing and refining (them) so that each piece comes from a place of aloha.”
Before her career at KGMB, she worked as an elementary French teacher at Le Jardin Academy. Now she infuses her teaching skills into her business.
“I hand-write a note to every customer, telling them where their shells were found and what they are called, if applicable,” said Dudley. “I’ve been shelling on Maui, Kauai, Oahu and the Big Island and sort my shells based on what island and side of the island they come from.”
