My Story

I am an artist, wife, friend, dog lover & breast cancer survivor who decided the world needed stylish post mastectomy shirts!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2015. I will never forget the day I received that phone call and joined the “c” club. A club I never wanted to belong to.

My decision for a double mastectomy was a well thought out one. It was arrived at after many tears, feelings of complete loss of control, phone calls, appointments, discussions with friends and family.

I began researching what a double mastectomy entailed. My friend had described the joy, or lack thereof, of the drain tubes and I decided I was going to make having them as easy as I could, considering the circumstances. I began looking into post-mastectomy shirts. What I found was pink, pink and more PINK! UGH! Plus, I found the styles were not, well, me! They were boring and expensive! I was not going to spend that much money on something I would wear hopefully 1-2 weeks! So, I decided if I could not find it, I was going to make it! After all, if I could make and design my own competitive figure skating costumes as a teenager, I could do this! I headed to the thrift store, bought several button down and zippered shirts. I headed to the craft store for fabric stamps, appliques and fabric to make pockets. I washed the shirts and went to town!

I loved having shirts that hid the tubes and made me look and feel, at least somewhat normal. I found myself going out to places other than doctor appointments and these didn't scream breast cancer patient! Throughout the recovery process I met several wonderful “cancer friends” and made shirts for them. Survivor Chic was born!

Thank you for visiting my shop. Please visit often as I will be continually adding new shirts. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. I am happy to assist and hope I can help others going through this process know they are not alone.
