Announcement   Susan Gainen supports the Children's Law Center of Minnesota and National Foster Care Month. During May 2018, this shop will donate 50 cents of every downloaded Adult Coloring Page.

Susan Gainen is a Whimsical Wildlife Documentarian and Abstract Painter.

She lives on a path that runs through Saint Paul (MN) and her living room studio. It is frequented by creatures who visit her studio to sit for portraits, tell stories, and eat snacks. She combines geometric abstractions into the portraits of Saint Paul's prehistoric, historic, and purely whimsical wildlife, including its Lost Cave Paintings, Tiny Wild Parrots and Hummingbirds, Wild Parrots of the Grim Winter of 2013, Backyard Roosters, and the Pandas & Frogs from Saint Paul's Hidden Bamboo Forest. Her first collection of 70+ creatures' portraits and stories is "The Small Friends' Chronicles." (soft cover and e-book from blurb.com)

LLLamas She is lucky to have encountered several LLLama (their spelling) families who are featured in their book "Meet the LLLamas." (softcover and ebook from amazon.com)

ROOSTERS With no animal husbandry in her family, she is perhaps the most surprised artist and author of "The Backyard Roosters of Saint Paul." Who knew that you don't need roosters for the production of eggs? For fertilized eggs, yes. For regular eggs, not at all. (softcover and ebook from amazon.com)

CATS She knows that judgments are made when people enter the home of Women of a Certain Age and the see nothing but 2-d and 3-d cat art, cat posters, cat wall hangings, cat-shaped bottles, and cat tapestries. Thus, in her apartment, all but four pieces of cat art are upstairs. That said, her Model, Muse and Snacks Manager is Max-the-Cat, who is very proud of his book, "The New World of Cats: Max-the-Cat and Friends." (softcover from amazon.com

STUDIO MANAGEMENT: Max-the-Cat is Snacks Manager. Because she has no idea what LLLamas, Lobsters, and Flamingos eat, it is her great good fortune that Max takes care of all of that. When she come downstairs to work, the guests have been served their appropriate whimsy breakfast.

ABSTRACT PAINTING Although her first watercolors were abstractions, she didn't abandon them for creature portraits, and often incorporate the designs into those portraits. All of her ADULT COLORING PAGES are based on original abstracts or creature paintings.

ABSTRACT NEIGHBORHOODS In 2016, she began to make mosaics from paper, acrylic paint, and acrylic mediums. Looking closely, she realized that this body of work complements her original abstract paintings which are (to her surprise) representations of neighborhoods. Each tiny piece looks better because of the pieces that surround it. Each is an original and priced according to size.

IMAGINATION & EXERCISE She exercise my imagination every day, exploring new creatures, new designs, and new materials. I hope you enjoy my work.

Note: She accepts commissions.

About

Whimsical Wildlife Documentarian

I began painting with watercolor in 2006, and my first works were geometric abstractions. My studio was soon filled with whimsical creatures who have run the show since then. I am now a Whimsical Wildlife Documentarian.

I live on a flyway and pathway for whimsical creatures, and I have taken responsibility for the prehistoric, historic and purely whimsical wildlife of Saint Paul, Minnesota. I imagine and excavate Saint Paul's Lost Cave Paintings. The Backyard Roosters, Wild Parrots of the Grim Winter of 2013, Tiny Wild Parrots & Hummingbirds, Creatures from Hyperspace (made with TerraSkin), and Pandas & Frogs from the Hidden Bamboo Forest of Saint Paul have visited my studio and sat for portraits.

Other creatures who inhabit or who have visited my studio are The LLLama (their spelling) Families (who have their own book, "Meet the LLLamas") and the 70+ creatures featured in the book "The Small Friends' Chronicles."

I accept commissions.

Welcome! I use watercolors to create bright geometric abstracts, portraits of whimsical creatures including The Lost Cave Paintings of Saint Paul (MN), the Wild Parrots of Saint Paul (MN), and paper mosaics (The Genus Papyrus).

Using the best quality paints, papers, and other substrates (including primed aluminum), my goal is to harness the power of color and pattern with whatever whimsical wind is blowing through my studio.
