Paintings as Portals
Some of my earliest memories are of pondering the paintings that hung on the walls of my childhood home. Those images seemed to open up portals between the mundane world in which I lived and the Great Perhaps where anything was possible. I like to think of my art becoming part of others' lives just as the paintings I grew up with were part of mine.
A short piece I wrote about what inspires me to paint was published in The Washington Post Magazine, December 27, 2015:
A s a child, I would gaze at the painting hanging over our sofa in the living room and see this: a squat blue animal with a large shining eye and green downturned mouth standing in front of a bunch of bananas. At some point I mentioned what I saw to my mother, and she was surprised. “It’s an interior with a yellow sofa and a coffee table,” she said. The “eye” was a cup on the table. This was an epiphany for me — how often had I been looking at things without realizing that others didn’t always see what I saw? There was another painting upstairs by my late grandmother; I puzzled over how it could look like one bird or two birds. My father said he thought it was just one bird, but I could still see it either way.
I had always liked to draw and paint, but as these ideas intrigued me, I wanted to explore as many media as possible. And I found that if you try to control too much, you lose the expressiveness. My high school art teacher understood this: He had us start by painting an entire canvas red; blank white space only gives you the illusion of control.
I went on to major in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and painted countless images of my own, but the painting from my childhood remains a favorite — and a turning point for me. I kept it when my parents downsized. Sometimes a table is just a table. But sometimes it is also a fantastic cerulean animal that gazes back at you with its soulful eye.

International customers - you are very welcome here. However, please be aware that any customs charges applied by your government are the responsibility of the buyer. International shipping rates have increased recently and I often have to pay for special packaging on larger items. Thank you for your understanding.
Shipping estimates are a good faith effort on my part; if I have significantly overestimated the cost I will reimburse the difference. However some of the cost often includes special packing materials; all of my pieces are different shapes, weights, materials and sizes so some require more special packaging than others (large pieces especially).
