Breathing new life into discarded bits of metal and wood
I did fine art photography for several years working primarily in 19th century processes. Cyanotypes, Bromoils, Three color Gum-Bichromates were labor intensive and kept me busy. As the majority of my subject matter was ocean themed my wife showed a few pieces to the owner of a waterfront gallery on Hatteras Island. She loved my art and it sold well.
Several years later my artistic wanderlust kicked in and I found myself wanting to work with something in three dimensions. I had limited welding experience years prior and decided to try scrap metal art. I soon discovered that obtaining the raw materials was difficult as scrap yard owners did not take kindly to people walking around because of insurance liability issues. I managed to acquire some scrap but not enough to fill my needs so I had to look for another option. The idea of “pleasantly decayed” driftwood and reclaimed old wood combined with rusty steel appealed to me. Along with my ocean themed art, Swimmin’ wit da Fishes was born.
