About

NICHE IN WILDLIFE ART PAINTED ON STONE CANVAS

I was a traditional oil painter for many years, specializing in Western Cowboy Art. I also did a lot of pencil sketches of Rodeo Events. While living in Arizona, my path crossed a desert miner, who gave me a piece of black and white marble and told me to go paint on it. To my amazement, I was totally lost and absorb in the stone and what a perfect background for wildlife . Stone became my canvas and still is my very favorite thing to paint on . Picking up a stone is like catching a glimpse of yesterday when you think of the thousands of years it took to form with all of its characteristics and I savor the moment when I realize what I will brush on the canvas. Do you remember skipping stones in a lake when the water was still and quiet? Remember the memories of the ripples created? That is what I feel when I paint whether it be a Regal Elk or a small Chipmunk. I endeavor to tell a story on my canvas stone canvas.

I first select a stone which tells me who is going to live there, then I spray it lightly with acrylic clear spray to create a "tooth" for the paint to cling to; then I transfer my design onto the stone, wash it in with a neutral color..then it is spray time again to prevent the wash from coming off the stone. The stone I use is polished and slick, so one must be careful, or you can lift the whole painting off, like a decal..been there a time or two..that's why extra spraying really pays off and allows for glazing techniques to enrich the colors. Now the fun begins, laying colors, washes and details of rocks and twigs and leaves, feather on the birds and fur on the wildlife, or perhaps bubbles on the trout..When complete I spray it again, then use a product called clear coat which is pour onto the slab, left to set for a few minutes while it creates bubbles like alkaseltzer..then I take a blow torch and scan over the piece, dissolving all the bubbles. The art work must set up for approximately 72 hours for curing time. After that it is complete and ready to ship and enjoy.

Living in Colorado has been such a blessing as our neighborhood is teeming with birds, deer, elk and even bears on occasions. My husband Leroy, is my support team.

I have participated in many arts and craft fairs, and do some here locally, but decided to venture out and do a store where I could share my art work with the world, and Etsy filled the bill for me.

Thank you .When I paint wildlife, I like to think I have in some way, brushed back the lost moments of time and make life re-appear on the stone, like a picture in a mirror.
