About

I Love Fabric and Paint and Dyes!!!!

I was teaching fabric dyeing and stencilling to some American ladies when I was in Mexico and one day they said to me that I should do some and sell them.. they'd be my first customers. I did this and the work just flew out the door! I could hardly keep up. Even when we went to a new anchorage I'd have people knocking on our yacht and asking " Are you the lady that paints quilt blocks?" It was kind of weird and loads of fun.

One day someone asked me if I was selling my work online. I'd never thought of that and so they told me of this great site called Etsy. I went online and had a look. Perused quite a few shops and decided to give it a try. But before I did that I thought I'd better build up a stock pile of work. I started dyeing and painting even more and set up a system so that when I sold some pieces I'd make a note of them and so be able to repaint some more.

Each and every piece is unique! How? Well, every piece is painted on a section of dyed fabric so that makes the backgrounds all different but of the same colours. Then when I paint each picture I do something different each time to make them totally unique.
We were leaving Mexico and heading south to Panama and then across the ocean to New Zealand and other places...
My shop Sylvie's Art On Fabric was born.

Oh didn't I say... on my travels on the ocean delivering yachts I met my partner in the Azores Islands, he was sailing around on his yacht.. yup those little bitty islands out there in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.. (who knew huh!) and we've been sailing around pretty much ever since!
I studied Applied Art and Design, Concentrating on Textile Design, waaaayyyy back when, and have been involved in the field ever since. When I lived in South Africa I hand dyed fabric by the 10 meter length and sold it to all the quilters ( by the meter), country wide, I sold at guild meetings and international quilt shows. I also had some shops display my fabric and had to constantly deliver new stock. I've been written up in a South African Magazine called Talking Threads, and also had one of my quilts, made with fabric I dyed and painted, photographed for a British Magazine after I'd exhibited my quilt at the Malvern Quilt Exhibition.
My pieces of art are all heat cured and totally washable ( by hand for longer lasting), though I have thrown several of my pieces in the machine to make sure I'm still creating good work!

MY LATEST ENDEVOUR!
I am now creating .. on line.. yardage! Using my existing designs.. if you want to know more about that, contact me on sylviesdesigns [!at] gmail.com
The idea is that you'd buy an original here and then go to my other shop and buy yardage created to compliment the original. That way you get something that works. :-)

So that's about it for now.. I'm having a wonderful time designing and creating :-) come along and visit, I promise you won't be disappointed!
Oh yes I almost forgot! If you want something unique write to me and we'll have a chat as to what you want. :-)

I grew up in Africa, rather wild and free. :-) I've always had the need to travel and see the world, so in 2002 I left Africa on a Catamaran to help deliver it to the USA. I got off in the Caribbean and the rest is history :-)

Thank you for visiting my store. This is an exciting endeavor for me at this time of my life. I hope that whatever you decide to purchase will give you and yours a lot of satisfaction for years and years and that you'll pass the quilt down the generations of your family. I get such a great feeling knowing that these blocks will last for so long, and give pleasure at the same time.

As a qualified and experienced Textile Designer, I am a total nut about fabric and colour. I cannot walk past a fabric store or a quilting shop, without going in. :-)
For a long time I'd been trying to think of something to make with fabric and then whilst we were sailing around the Sea of Cortes in Mexico I struck on this idea. I had been teaching fabric dyeing, stencil cutting and printing one year in La Paz when I realised that it was possible that people might like to buy what I did...so hence the Quilt Blocks.
I will be incorporating half meter lengths of fabric to go along with the blocks in the near future...

Have fun and enjoy. :-D
