About

Serving the Jeweler, Craftsman Hobbyist, and Student for 118 Years

TB Hagstoz was started by Thomas Barwiss Hagstoz in 1898, and has operated in the same location on Sansom street in Philadelphia's Jeweler's Row ever since. When it first started, it was primarily a refining business where all types of scrap metal would be turned into pure metals, then alloyed to karat golds and sterling and sold to manufacturing jewelers, craftsmen, and hobbyists.

Thomas Barwiss Hagstoz passed away in 1915 and the business was taken over by his son, Arthur T. Hagstoz, who ran the business in much the same way as his father. Rumor has it that Arthur was more interested in the profits, taking long lunches, and shooting pool at the Union League, however, somehow the business survived and prospered! His son, George S. Hagstoz took over the business in 1950 and began expanding it. In addition to the refining and assaying, he added jewelry tools, equipment, and findings, which is what TB Hagstoz continues to sell today.

TB Hagstoz is now run by TB's great-grandsons, Arthur Thomas & Ross Hagstoz, and also employs TB's great-great-grandson, Ross Elliott Hagstoz. It's one of the last old-time jewelry supply shop in Philadelphia. If you walked into the store tomorrow, you'd experience the same friendly, knowledgable service that Thomas Barwiss Hagstoz provided in 1898. There is even the same brass bell at the counter!

Welcome! While TB Hagstoz has been a small family-run business since 1898, I just listed our first items on Etsy in January 2014. Our retail shop in Philadelphia sells a vast array of precious & base metals, tools and findings for jewelry making, and I am working on adding these items to the discs we currently sell on Etsy. If you are looking for something related to jewelry making, we probably stock it - just ask!
