Indigo has a rich history around the world and was valued as a luxury product by the Greeks and the Romans. Our Indigo shibori process is rooted in ancient Japan, where back in 1600’s the Samurai wore indigo-dyed fabrics or AI-zome under their armour to help keep bacteria from wounds. Natural indigo dyed clothing has a surprising range of characteristics such as antibacterial and odor and dirt repellent.
TJ Indigo Clothing brand launched in Toronto in 2015 by Tamila Lesov. We offer a contemporary take on the ancient indigo shibori technique - A mix of modern comfort, sustainability and beautiful quality in a distinctive 'living' blue color. Our garments are cut, sewn and dyed locally from natural and often organic fabrics and each one is organically unique.
Go eco-friendly with our handmade and hand dyed clothing, bedding and accessories!

Care instructions
All our garments ship pre-washed and preshrunk. To prolong the life of your indigo dyed garments we recommend hand washing in lukewarm water and hanging to dry.
Items such as bedding, baby items and cotton tshirts can be washed in a laundry machine in cold water and machine dried.
First and second washing should be separate from others, after this dye will not transfer onto other clothing and can be washed with similar clothing. Do not bleach. Do not dry clean.

What is the difference between natural and synthetic indigo?
“Although the chemical formula for natural and synthetic indigo is the same, synthetic indigo is almost pure indigotin. Natural indigo has a high proportion of impurities such as indirubins, that give beautiful colour variations.”
What is natural indigo made of?
Leaves. Indigofera tinctoria, also called true indigo, is a species of plant from the bean family. Indigo is the only natural source of 'true blue' color. While some other natural materials may yield various blues, plant based indigo generates the only colourfast method.
