About

Mixed Media Frenzy

I have been creating things all of my life. My father was a mechanical engineer and an inventor who taught me to use all kinds of power tools - as well as a torch - when I was a child.

As a typical college and grad student in the 1970s, I didn't have much money so I taught myself to make things to decorate our first apartment and to give as gifts to family and friends. Although art classes were certainly available when I was a student, I found that I was drawn to things that had been part of my childhood: ornaments on feather trees made with shiny foil bits from Germany, tiny little houses and people sitting under the tree or in displays in front parlors, rhinestone jewelry, stained glass.

While I continued to create as my children were born, I needed most of my time to raise them and to be a public school administrator. Once all of my children were in school, I started to make things again to sell at craft fairs and was fortunate to be a part of the revival of stenciling in the late 1970s/early 1980s. I finally opened a shop in my guest house and sold antiques, stenciled items, stencils, paints, and supplies, and other hand-crafted items. I figured that as an administrator I was a teacher of adults - although teaching adults can be more difficult than teaching children! - so I might as well start teaching craft classes. Soon, my shop and home became a beehive of stenciling, basket making, rug braiding, and related projects on Wednesday evenings. My children still remember those "lasagna's in the oven" nights!

Job demands and the demands of a house full of teenagers forced me to close the shop after 10 very active and fun years. However, I never lost the urge to create and to buy and sell. Enter the internet and the whole world opened up to me! Now I sell, buy, and create as much as possible and am trying many new materials and methods. My favorite media continue to be paint and paper and my favorite eras continue to be Victorian and Art Deco. I find inspiration and ideas in vintage ornaments, jewelry, and decorations. I love to incorporate vintage items with new items to make one-of-a kind pieces. My grandchildren often “Cruise” with me to antique shops, yard sales, and flea markets and they help me create! As I get ready to retire from the public school arena, I fell like my creative life is truly beginning!

I'll be adding photos of my studio and projects in various stages soon. Please join me for the ride!

I think I have been making things with just about any material I could get my hands on for most of my life. Paint and paper are my favorite items to work with, which means I'll put paint and paper on just about anything!
