Get professional teddy bear Sewing KIT – Make your own tiny Teddy!

1) If you don’t mind, where you live and a little about you and your family?

I live in a beautiful city Odessa which is situated at the cost of Black Sea in Ukraine. My family is me, my husband and 4 kids: two girls and two boys. My daughters are also creative. Nadia is the elder one and she likes to sketch with a pencil. Taisia like to sculpting. They both go to school of arts.

2) How long have you been making bears?

I started my way of bear making from crocheting little pigs as a gift for my family for New Year in December 2006. I have been creating the crocheted animals till summer 2007. Then I found out the world of artist bears and in that period I discovered Ebay. It was my first international presentation of a bear.

3) How did you become interested in bears?

Suddenly I saw a very pretty miniature crocheted bear in someone’s blog. I decided to create my own miniature bear. It came out pretty enough. I swod it in live journal group ru teddy and got a lot of positive comments. This was a big stimuli to go ahead.

4) What made you start making bears? How did you start?

After some months of crocheting miniature I started thinking of sewing a bear. But for me it was difficult to make such decision as my sewing skills were too poor and i did not know how to start and where to find information.

5) Have you attended classes? If so, who taught you and how did they help you?

In my city and country nobody knew about bear making at that time. May be there were some artists but I never knew about them. There were no shows, no exhibitions and no teddy museums here. So finally I found out one excellent tutorial on one doll forum. It was in Russian (Russian is my native language but I also speak Ukrainian well) and it had lots of photos of each stage. I am very grateful to that person as it was my first time when I started sewing bears.

6) Do you have a favourite style/size/shape of bear to make?

Mostly I sew bears in miniature style with elements of anime or antique. I like to detail them, make accessories and to dress. Also it is interesting for me use different techniques in decorating bear - crocheting flowers, knitting clothes, embroidering heads wit silk ribbon and beads, some sculpting and felting, shading.

7) What makes your bears special to you?

They are special because are born from my mind, my soul and dreams. They always come out not as they were imagined or drown on paper. Maybe they character and personality do not depend on me but on my mood.

8) What are your favourite colours to use?

Multicolor is the best color :) Usually before starting new project (I mean new collection) I chose appropriate material and cut into small pieces and then die them in huge variety of colors. So all collection is made in one shape and material but looks like a rainbow.

9) What are your favourite materials? Any particular reason?

Most of all I prefer special fabrics for miniature. They have flock baking and the pile is glued to it. So the fabric is very soft by touch and looks beautiful in small sizes. As for the bigger bears I like silk mohair - it is very gorgeous and magical by touch.

10) How do you draw inspiration for your designs? What would be the biggest influence on your designs?

I find inspiration everywhere. For instance I am looking on the ground and see a piece of chocolate wrapping thrown by somebody. Ordinary people see only the wrapping& I see combination of colors and textures and my mind draw the future picture. But during the process of bear sewing I can change my mind hundred of times and as the result I get absolutely new bear who created himself by his own. I just help him put together fabric peaces using a needle.

11) Do you consider your bears to have a signature style? How did you develop this?

I am not sure but people say my bears have special recognizable look, especially they face expressions and eyes. I do not try to make them similar but every artist has it subconscious signature.

12) Have your bears evolved?

Like everything in our world. I find something new sand they accept this new. Time goes. New bears take their new characteristics, new styles. I like to travel and bring something new from each journey to bears. Also attending bear shows makes chantings in my thoughts and produces new ideas.

13) Do you have any special tips to share for making a bear?

The main tip and advice is to make bears by yourself by your own unique design, never copy other bear artists works. Every time try to find something new^ something that did not exist before.

14) What do you like most about making bears?

Most of all I like two stages. The first one is creating face (on this stage the bear starts looking at me) and another is dressing and accessorizing.

15) Which one of your bears is your most memorable? Why?

Little polar bear cub Flocke. She is famous around the internet for last 7 years. People arguing if she is real or not. If you enter «polar bear cub» in Google search you will see her photos without doubt.

16) Which one of your bears is your favourite? Why?

I do not have favorite bears. When I do my new collection some bear may happen to be my favourite, but after time I fall in love with my new creation. It is endless love to new bears.

17) Do any of your bears come with interesting stories?

Once I sold a bear and 5 years later I found out that she belongs to very well-known and rich person. I was shocked as I don’t know the new owners of my bears. It was very pleasant.

18) Which one of your bears is your most treasured? Why?

Flocke. I told earlier her story but for me she is a real treasury. The income from the pattern and kit sale is bigger for the last 6 years then from selling bears for this period.

19) Do you attend bear shows? If so, what aspect of the shows do you like best?

When I started bear making I attended shows 6 times a year in Germany, Russia, France, Belgium, Switzerland. But in 2012 my youngest son was born and I have to stay with him. That period I attended online bear show. Now I am traveling again) I can not tell what show is the best& Each one has its beauty and many interesting things to see and many talented artists to meet.

20) Which one of your bears makes you most proud? Why?

The micro bear which is a little bit shorter then 1 inch (she is approximately 2.2 cm). She is jointed, weighted, shaded and accessorized.

21) If you accessorise your bears, where do you get the accessories from?

I buy beads and pendants all over the world via interned and on exhibitions.

22) Do you sell bears over the internet? If so, which channels do you use? How has your experience been so far? Any interesting stories?

At first I was selling via Ebay auctions. But now my favorite channels are Bearpile and Etsy. I also fond of Instagram.

23) How do your friends and family feel about your bear making?

At first my husband thought the bear making is just the usual kind of madness and looked at this passion skeptically. But soon he realized it is part of me and for my surprise began to help me. He took all duties about my shop of bear materials and customers.
Of course my kids are happy to look after my progress and their opinion as for the new work is in priority.

24) Who do you consider to be your biggest supporter? And how do they help you?

My family. My colleagues - bear artists. My collectors.

25) What other crafts are you interested in? Are these helpful in your bear making?

I am fond of graphic drawing, knitting, crocheting, silk embroidering. I use these techniques in bear making from time to time.

26) What advice, if any, would you give to new bear makers?

Do not be afraid look stupidly. Try new techniques, make something unusual. Use qualitative materials and be accurate.

27) What competition or awards have you won?
