About

Button, Button, Who's Got the Button?

When I came upon an antiques seller who had literally thousands of wonderful vintage sewing buttons, I realized that this was the key to my new hair accessory idea.

The seller had purchased the lot from an estate which belonged to an elderly lady. She had married her true love, who was a furrier in New York City, back in the 1940's. Their marriage was still new, though a baby was on the way when war broke out and away he went, to serve. He was killed in action and the trauma was very difficult for her.

To cope, she would come into the city and walk around the fashion district, visiting shops and purchasing buttons and feathers for millinery. The antiques dealer was told that she never was able to fully recover from the heartbreak of losing her husband. Apparently she spent years combing the accessories wholesale market and amassing the buttons and feathers. When she passed away, her daughter found a dealer who would pass this story on to all who showed interest in those wonderful buttons with a bittersweet history.

I was, by happenchance, one of the first to see the lot, and was so moved by this story that I did my very best to choose as many buttons as I could possibly afford. Each week I would come back to the dealer with my few dollars; I bartered some of my own antiques as well, and one weekend even sat in to watch the booth while he ran an errand. In exchange, I was to choose twenty buttons.

While I still do have a few buttons from that original cache, most are from sources I have no history of. But I would like to think that each and every one of these old gems has some story behind them; hopefully not as tragic.

My first wholesale account was the Fifth Avenue boutique, Henri Bendel, where I did several trunk shows at the store to showcase the most exquisite of the hair goods. I did well, but found the one of a kind characteristic of vintage buttons was not really suitable for retail, and so I began selling in Manhattans Upper West Side outdoors GreenMarket.

When I heard about the Etsy platform, I felt this was a very appropriate place to develop a little boutique for my goods. I hope you will enjoy looking through the pages of buttons I've recreated as hair accessories.

Note: No button has been damaged in order to create these goods. I simply thread my elastic cording through the existing shank. This allows the buttons to retain their intrinsic, and oftentimes collectible, nature.

I have worked in the fashion accessories field since 1988, starting as a handbag designer in New York City. One day I was inspired to take sewing buttons and turn them into hair accessories. Talisman was launched!

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
Our preferred method of payment is through PayPal. If you haven't got an account, you can still use their system and pay with credit or debit cards(Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express). To make your payment, simply click on the PayPal logo, and you'll be walked through the process.

We also accept checks and money orders. Please remit promptly as payment is due within 3 days of purchase. Keep in mind that your check must be cleared before your order is shipped. This can take up to 10 business days, depending on your location, so please plan accordingly.

If you have trouble using Etsy’s payment system, please contact us so we will work to resolve the issue quickly.
Shipping
NOTICE: We ship ALL orders asap, but it may be to 7 days before we are able to get to the post office. The reason for this is that I am taking advantage of a wonderful caretaker opportunity on a nature preserve in upstate New York(Mohonk Preserve).

I am actually living in a cabin in the woods, with no electricity or plumbing, and no cel/internet service. And no car! It is 1/4 mile to potable water, 1 mile to cel service and 8 miles to the post office. I do usually check into my shop every 2-3 days, but then a second trip into town is required to process the postal delivery.

Hopefully this will not be more than a minor inconvenience entailing a little patience on your part, but I do apologize in advance if the shipping situation is not acceptable for your purposes.

Orders are shipped to the PayPal name/address provided. Upon checkout, please verify that your Etsy name/address matches your PayPal name/address. Failure to do so will delay shipment of your order.

Keep in mind that we must receive your payment, and checks must be cleared through your bank, before items are shipped.

Orders are shipped Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Items are shipped by standard USPS. This is our preference, but we may be able to accommodate other shipping methods. If you have special needs or are limited in timing, please contact us BEFORE placing your order. Note, additional charges may apply.

Shipping charges include USPS postage along with cost of packaging.

International Orders: We do ship internationally! Please note that the postal service charges a large fee in order to track/confirm delivery for packages sent outside the United States. The cost is between $12 and $18 USDollars, per package.
- In general, we do NOT use a tracking/confirmation service for our overseas shipments. For orders totaling over $60(not including shipping), we require the use of a tracking service.
- If your items total more than $60, or you would like us to use a tracking service for items under $60, we'll invoice the amount to you through PayPal, and send the item out once that payment has been received.
- The US Postal Sevice says that most packages shipped internationally arrive 5-10 days after shipped. However, the reality is that often packages take longer, due to delays going through the Customs process. Every country has different practices. Please allow at least two full weeks before being concerned.
- Several buyers and sellers have given accounts of items taking up to 4 months, and even longer, to arrive. Therefore, we believe it is reasonable to wait 30 days after shipment before beginning the process of considering replacement/refund or another option. It may take up to another 14 days before we confirm our decision and act. During that time we will be researching the Customs policies of the particular country, and other considerations.
- We reserve the right to decline orders from customers with a history of claims of non-receipt of goods. In such cases, the order will be cancelled before shipment and any payment made will be refunded.
- Any Customs fees and/or taxes are the responsibility of the buyer.
Refunds and Exchanges
Talisman Studios takes pride in choosing and working with quality materials. Please do keep in mind that many of our ornaments are vintage, antique and/or hand-crafted, and thus will have some evidence of this. Of course, rest assured we do not use damaged goods.

If there are any problems with your order, please let us know so we can find a solution. Our refund policy is as follows:
- Please contact us by email within five business days of receipt of goods. Refunds for purchase price will be provided upon return of goods. Sorry, we can not reimburse for return shipping costs.
Additional policies and FAQs
The buttons we use are collectible, and we are careful to protect them in order to maintain their intrinsic value. Instead of gluing the buttons to machine-made "ouchless" elastic bands, we string them through the buttonhole with a commercial grade elastic cording cut specifically to appropriate length.

This cord is designed for use in accessories and apparel, and is hand knotted. You will see the knot on the back of the ornament, where it is usually able to be tucked away when worn. In some cases, the cord is hitched around the button shank, and the knot is visible when displayed. Rest assured, when you wear the piece, the small knot hides underneath the button, and is not a visible distraction.

For those who have very thick and/or wavy/curly hair, the thinner elastics(any brand) are not suitable, and they may find their hair easily tangles in the cording. If requested, we WILL sew singlet designs onto a wider machine made elastic band. The fee for this service is an additional $2.00 per item. Please contact us BEFORE sending payment and we will issue a revised invoice. We are sorry, but we cannot offer this option with "doublet" designs.

Upon receipt of your order, we encourage you to leave feedback on Etsy.com. It's very easy to do - simply click on the "Feedback" button on our shops sidebar to the right. Your feedback tells us that you have received your items, and whether you are satisfied with the merchandise and our handling of the transaction.

Once again - thank you for visiting Talisman Studios. We look forward to working with you!
