Hello! I’m Janice and I can’t remember not loving quilts. I’ve been actively quilting for twenty years but some of my earliest memories are “quilting” with glue and fabric from the scrap bag of a family friend. I also cross stitch, knit, and crochet. Basically, if it is textile related, I’ve tried it!
I'm passionate about reuse and signing your art. The quilts in my Etsy shop are zero-waste and are created with the extra fabric that remains from the custom memory quilts and t-shirt quilts that I make. The quilt tops are made from t-shirt scraps and the batting in each quilt is pieced together from extra batting. I give t-shirt scraps that are too small to be used in quilts to a friend who uses them to stuff pet beds for the local animal shelter. You can read more about what I mean by zero waste quilting on my blog here: https://www.tangibleculturellc.com/2019/11/zero-waste-quilting.html
My love of making quilts and needlework also extends to learning as much about the history of textile arts as I can. I turned that interest into advanced degrees in the history of women’s textile arts and folklore. Those have led to great opportunities to travel the world to do research and see some amazing textile art.
I’m also a writer and and wrote almost one third of the recent book from the International Quilt Museum, "American Quilts in the Industrial Age, 1760-1870." You can also find my work published in "Quilt Studies: The Journal of the British Quilt Study Group."
