Simplicity, High Quality, Excellent Craftsmenship

My Father and Grandfather instilled a love for working with my hands at a very young age. Helping my dad in his workshop, building, creating, that time was always a special opportunity to learn and of course be with him. Many years, many projects, and a few kids later I came across a passion for leather working completely by necessity. Needing a new leather wallet, and unable to justify the high cost, and low quality of brand names, I set out to make my own, and did. Having done a better job than expected, and now having some tools, I'd like to share this passion for excellent craftsmanship with you.

As you will see many of my pieces come in your choice of leather color, and one I am most proud of and consider my signature style is my Natural "Georgia" Tan. My version of this classic natural vegetable tanned leather style is just that, leather naturally tanned by the blazing Georgia sun. I take my finished pieces and set them out in the sometimes unbearable sun of the South. Just like your skin, the leather takes on a darker, natural sun tan. Some pieces even come with tan lines.

Tannery South Leather Co. is about working hard and playing hard, having fun, and the simple things that make you happy. I strive for straight lines, memorable personal touches, and amazing customer service. My goal is passionate customers for life, nothing less.

I hope the following list of questions and answers is helpful but please don't hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do for you.

Why are handmade leather goods so expensive?
Here at Tannery South Leather Co. I never compromise on quality. Yeah, yeah, everybody says that, but I really mean it. Each piece is meticulously crafted by myself in my home. Wallets take an average of 8 hours to make. Belts take an average of 9 hours to make. Bags take between 25-60 hours, depending on their size. Each piece is carefully and thoughtfully designed with ergonomics and durability in mind. Form always follows function, but that's not to say that beauty isn't also very important. The best possible hides are selected for each project, and carefully inspected for natural weak spots or large imperfections or brands. Pieces with any "negative" attributes are not selected for use. Attention to detail is paramount, and painstaking effort is given to make sure each stitch is purposeful and straight. Heavy duty rivets are used in high-stress areas, and backstitching is used where a rivet isn't appropriate. Finally, each edge is hand-burnished for a smooth and finished appearance. I think you'll find that my prices are fair and reflect the old world craftsmanship, attention to detail, and durability that goes into and comes out of every piece.

Isn't everything technically made by hand?
Well, no. Not really. Handmade actually means something is made with hands or hand tools. Once you start bringing machines into the construction of leather goods, they're no longer handmade. They're hand-crafted, but not handmade. Every one of my pieces is 100% handmade.

What's so terrible about stitching things with a machine? What's so virtuous about hand-stitching?
The truth is, sewing machines are great. They're fast, efficient, and they can crank out beautiful leather goods in a fraction of the time it takes to hand stitch. So what's the problem? Machine stitching is flawed from a durability standpoint. Leather is strong. Really strong. The weak point in any leather piece is the stitching. A Lock Stitch is made with a machine, when two needles enter a hole (one from the top and one from the bottom), meet in the middle, hook the thread together, and move onto the next hole. This makes the stitch prone to unraveling if a portion of the thread breaks.

Doesn't Saddle Stitched thread break as well? Yes! The good news is, that if a thread does break, which happens from time to time with natural wear and tear, it won't come unraveled.

If you're not familiar with the legend that is Horween here's a little background.

Horween Leather Company was founded in Chicago, Il in 1905 by master tanner Isidore Horween. For over 100 years their goal has been to make the best leather in the world. Horween believes that making the best means doing lots of little things right, it means never mistaking fastest or cheapest with best. Through the years they have cultivated their experience to offer a dynamic line of leathers that include traditional old world tannages and techniques along with carefully updated modern techniques. Their leathers are still made today, by hand, the same way they were over a hundred years ago.

What's so great about Bamboo and Hemp Thread? Bamboo and Hemp Thread are among the strongest natural threads on Earth.

About Hemp
Hemp has been used throughout human history. Chinese archaeological evidence shows that hemp was used for clothes, shoes and rope over 10 000 years ago. Hemp was commonplace in Europe throughout the middle ages. It was used for textiles, clothing and even food. Hemp’s strength, durability and low cost made it ideal for military uniforms, ships’ sails and rope. More recently, hemp was cultivated in the United States during World War II to make uniforms, canvas and rope.

About Bamboo
Bamboo is the fastest-growing woody plant on earth, some species growing at 3-4 feet per day! Like hemp, bamboo is easy to cultivate and naturally organic (requiring no pesticides or herbicides). During growth, bamboo absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere helping to combat global warming. Bamboo makes a beautiful soft fabric Like hemp it is naturally antibacterial and antifungal.

Returns and exchanges
Buying online is tough, you can’t hold it or touch it or try it on. So, if you get it and it’s too big or small or heavy or uncomfortable, then contact us within 30 days and as long as it’s in like-new condition, AND NOT A PERSONALIZED ITEM, then no big deal. The return shipping will be on your dime though. If you answer NO to any of the following contact us immediately:

Did you get what we said you would get? The color was what you thought it would look like. The look was fine. The weight was acceptable. The functionality was there. If NO to any of these questions, then, right away contact us and we’ll get you all set for in-store credit for an exchange, or refund you for the product as long as it’s in like-new condition.
Did an accident happen to it? A paint spill, a sticky conditioner was applied, a toddler drew all over it with a sharpie, a skunk sprayed it, a motorcycle dragged it for miles etc. If YES, then start working on your story, because people will be asking you what the hell happened.

Did you irreversibly modify it? Burn your name into it, cut off part of it, remove something from it or modify it in some way or in any other way that would make it so that it can't be sold for full price again? If YES, then eBay is probably a good option for you.

Are you just plain bored of it? You’re tired of waiting for it to break in or you want to try something new. If YES, then try trading it for something to someone who will enjoy it. That could be fun.

Now the details:
Items must be unused and undamaged, in their original packaging (gift box, where applicable, and product tags, guarantee cards, etc). Shipping cost and any rush order fees (where applicable) will not be refunded. Please make sure that the Item is properly packaged in its original packing and that you use the correct address and appropriate shipping methods for return shipping. As stated above, if a package is lost, damaged, or does not arrive due to the fault of the USPS, we will not be able to replace it for you without a new order.

Although we are confident in our products, and your satisfaction with them, unfortunately buyer’s remorse will not be an acceptable reason for a refund.

If there is a problem with your order that is the result of our error, we will fix it immediately and pay all return and reshipping fees.

Custom orders are non-refundable. Personalized orders are non-refundable.
If an item has been incorrectly personalized by us, we will replace it with the correct personalization.

If you damage your new product due to negligence, you are responsible, and there is no refund.

If in doubt, ask questions first. We will make every effort to reach a fair resolution.
Currently we take credit card payments via Etsy or PayPal. Custom orders will be placed in line as they are received.

Prices are subject to change without notice
We ship our products via USPS First Class, tracking information is provided with every order. We do ship some of our pieces internationally, but unfortunately USPS does not provide tracking once your package leaves the United States. All orders will be shipped within the time frame posted in the listing.

Please keep in mind the actual time it takes to make the order, not just process it. All of the items are handmade at the time you place your order. All shipping dates are approximate, and orders may ship sooner or later than posted on the listing, but we will always keep you informed the entire way as to the status. Most items will typically take between 3-5 days to make, so please allow for at least that amount of time plus shipping to receive them.
